Hiryu no Ken Special: Fighting Wars is a mixed fighting game for the Famicom.
It seems to focus on tournament-style fighting, with characters from a wide
variety of technical fighting backgrounds. This gives you the option of going
with a fighting style that you prefer or find interesting. The only drawback
is that the opponents get very difficult extremely quickly, so there is a
sharp learning curve. If you are up for the challenge, go ahead and give this
game a try!

==========
Game Modes
==========

When you first start the game, you will be able to pick from four game modes:

Circuit (サーキット): The main story mode of play.

Tag Match (タッグ マチ): Enter a 2-on-2 match where your partner can tag in
or out (Down + A) during the match.

VS Tournament (VSトーナメント): Fill a tournament bracket and play it out to
                               see who becomes the champion!

Elimination Match (イリミネーション マッチ): Each side picks four characters,
for four matches, and the ones
who win get to go on.

Once you pick a mode (aside from Circuit), you will be given the option to
choose your characters (キャラクターをえらぶ), enter a password (パスワード)
to continue from where you left off previously, or have the game set the
characters and matchups for you (おわり; VS Tournament only). There are 12
characters you can choose from (listed below). Once you pick someone, you
will be ready to go.

Gameplay
========

General Information
-------------------

In this game, the way to fight is through a unique targeting system where
during the match, a target can appear on your character or the enemy, and you
must either attack/defend that location accordingly (you can't just fight
blindly; this requires you to have a strategy and pay attention). As you
fight, your KO gauge on the bottom will gradually fill; get hit by enemy
attacks and it will deplete. If it is full, you can use your special ability
to cause a lot of damage if it connects.

Usually the targets will be red, but sometimes a blue one will come up. It
means you have an opportunity to grab and throw your opponent (Down + A + B).
A red star may also appear; if you hit it, you will be able to attack many
times in a row without being blocked for a few moments.

==========
Setting Up
==========

When you begin a game in Circuit Mode, you will first be able to pick your
character. The next screen will ask if you want to customize them (the first
option, する , is yes; the second one, しない , is no). You can customize
your character by entering a name and distributing Parameter Points to the
various statistics. Those statistics are as follows:

Arm Strength (わんりょく)
Movement (きゃくりょく)
Physical Strength (たいりょく)
Willpower (せいしんりょく)

Defense Power (ぼうぎょりょく)
Beating Power (うたれづよさ)
Throwing Power (なげられづよさ)
Choking Power (しめられづよさ)

Agility (すばやさ)
Technique (テクニック)
Accuracy (せいかくさ)

The bottom stat (おこり) shows how many extra points you have remaining to
spend. When you are ready to proceed, press A to bring up another menu screen
(これでいく - Apply, へんこうする - Change).

The next screen will ask you what gameplay mode you want to enter into (this
also affects the control scheme, in that you need to press Up + A/B to do a
high attack instead of simply pressing A/B to attack anywhere a target is on
the enemy):

Standard (スタンダード)
Practice (れんしゅう)
Super Technique (スーパー テクニック)

This will be followed by a screen asking what difficulty setting you want
(the Easy setting shows you how the controls work):

Easy (やさしい)
Difficult (むずかしい)

The final screen will ask if you want to use the mark system (マークシステム)
which turns on/off the targets used to determine when and where you need to
attack or defend:

With (あり)
Without (なし)

Once you answer that question, the Circuit Mode will begin!

Circuit Mode
============

NOTE: Certain opponents may be different depending on what character you
     choose at the start.

Starting Off
------------

1. Training (defeat the opponent, win $10000)

2. Rush Training (pay $10000)
Information: When a red star target appears, hit your opponent and you
will be able to do a Rush Attack. This means you can attack
repeatedly for several moments without being blocked, which
                causes lots of damage.

3. Offense-1 Power Up Training (pay $10000)
Information: You have 8 seconds to lift weights as much as you can, by
pressing A repeatedly. You need to move the arrow into the
green segment of the meter at the top of the screen, or you
fail. Succeed and you can earn a maximum of 26 Parameter
Points to use in boosting your offensive stats!

Minor Circuit - New York, America
---------------------------------

1. Fight: Monster Joe (モンスター  ジョウ)
Information: Your first real opponent, he is very simple as you would
expect. There is nothing special to look out for aside from
the regular moves. Take advantage of rush attacks and any
chances to grab/throw him for added damage!

2. Advanced Techniques (pay $10000)
Information: You can pick techniques from the right column and switch
with those listed in the left column, and you will learn how
                to perform them.

3. Fight: Toukon Tarou (とうこん たろう)
Information: This guy brings you another simple fight, since he doesn't
have any special moves and is not all that aggressive. I
treat it as another training session, to be honest.

4. Gripping Training (pay $10000)
Information: This training session shows you how to grab an opponent and
the different throwing methods (when the target is green).

5. Fight: Muguruma Shirou (むぐるま しろう)
Information: This is the final battle of the Minor Circuit in New York.
He is a bit faster than the first two guys, but is still
quite simple. The interesting part is that it seems you end
the fight by gripping/throwing him to the ground.

After the fight, you will now be the Minor Circuit champion!

6. Defense-1 Power Up Training (pay $10000)
Information: You have 16 seconds, and you must defend yourself from the
                opponent's high/medium/low attacks successfully. Depending
on how well you did, you can earn up to 20 Parameter Points
                to boost your defensive stats!

Major Circuit - China
---------------------

1. Fight: Crusher Dan (クラッシャー ダン)
Information: For the first Major Circuit opponent, this guy moves very
quickly and likes to knee you in the face to knock you down.
It can be a tough fight, but if you are able to keep up with
the pace, you will be just fine.

2. Secret Technique Training (pay $10000)
Information: In this training session, you learn how to grab and choke
your opponent after he is on the ground (press A or B when
above their body, then tap A and B repeatedly).

3. Fight: William Gordon (ウイリアム ゴードン)
Information: This fight is a little bit slower than Crusher Joe before,
but he likes to use a somersault attack if you don't defend
properly. Aside from that, you should have little difficulty
keeping up to win this battle.

4. Technique-1 Power Up Training (pay $10000)
Information: You have 20 seconds, and you must hit the targets as they
fly toward you from both sides. The targets will be on all
three levels, so you need to use Up/Down + A/B to hit some
of them. You can earn up to 22 Parameter Points here for
                your agility stats.

5. Fight: Ryuuhi (りゅうひ)
Information: This fight will be a bit tougher, especially since Ryuuhi
attacks quite often. His special attacks involve flying
kicks, and one where he jumps high in the air before doing a
spinning kick. It is tough to block these, but if you keep
up, you should do fine. Land your blows and be prepared to
grip/throw to complete the fight at the end.

After the fight with Ryuuhi, you will become the Major Circuit champion!

World Circuit - London, England
-------------------------------

1. Fight: Jackie Dean (ジャッキー ディーン)
Information: This fight is very similar to the one with Ryuuhi before, in
that Jackie Dean has the same moves and can knock you down
pretty quickly. You need to stay on top of your defense and
attack when you can to make it through this fight.

2. ??? Training (pay $10000)
Information: You simply are paying for a hint here, saying to finish off
the opponent when he is staggering around in a daze.

3. Fight: Bob Roman (ボブ ローマン)
Information: This guy is very fast on his feet, and likes to attack very
quickly as well. If you are not careful, he will uppercut or
kick you right onto the mat! If you are quick to defend his
attacks, and land some of your own, you should be able to
throw him down to complete the match.

4. Offense-2 Power Up Training (pay $10000)

5. Fight: Mick Johnston (ミック ジョンストン)
Information: The final fight in the circuit against this guy is tough, in
that his attacks are strong and it's tough to land hits on
him. There isn't really anything particularly noteworthy
other than that you need to keep up with defending and
attacking when you can to win this battle.

Upon your victory against Mick Johnston, you will be the World Circuit champ!

Minor Circuit - Bangkok, Thailand
---------------------------------

1. Fight: Piston Holmes (ピストン ホームズ)
Information: This boxer is difficult since he is constantly jabbing at
you, giving very little room for error on your part. If you
can not keep up, you will find yourself knocked out VERY
shortly after the match begins. As with any fight in this
game, you need to keep up with the targets and attack/defend
                as needed to win.

2. Fight: Kamikaze Kid (カミカゼ キッド)
Information: As a change of pace, this fight is actually a bit slower
than the previous few (at least I think so). He likes to use
flying kicks that can knock you down fast, so be ready for
that. He also blocks a lot of your attacks, but at least you
will have the opportunity to attack this time around.

3. Fight: Sagat Pashirin (サガット パーシリン)
Information: As he tells you prior to the battle, Sagat is trained in
Muay Thai, so his attacks are all kick-based. He really
likes using his knees to knock you down instantly, and jumps
around often, so defend yourself accordingly. For this kind
of battle, it's more about evading his attacks than actually
landing your own (not that your attacks are not important).

Following the match, you will be the Minor Circuit champ again!

4. Technique-2 Power Up Training (pay $10000)
Information: You have 20 seconds, and you must hit the targets as they
fly toward you from both sides. The targets will be on all
three levels, so you need to use Up/Down + A/B to hit some
of them. You can earn up to 22 Parameter Points here for
                your agility stats.

Major Circuit - Los Angeles, America
------------------------------------

1. Fight: Waira (ワイラー)
Information: This guy is a tough guy who likes to use his fists to attack
yet seems to move slowly enough for you to keep up. That
does not make the fight any easier, but it certainly gives
you a better chance at winning. The standard defend/attack
                pattern applies here, of course.

2. Fight: Bobby Howler (ボビー ハウラー)
Information: Your opponent here is a fast-moving boxer, and his flurry of
punches will send you flying if you are not careful! As with
any battle, it ends up being a matter of how quick you are
with the controls as far as defending from his attacks and
landing potent attacks of your own are concerned.

3. Fight: Hurricane Benny (ハリケーン ベニー)
Information: The last fight in the circuit is still tough, especially
since this opponent likes to jump around and kick to attack.
He will be able to make quick work of you if you give any
room for errors on your part. Keep up with him and attack
when possible, and you will be able to get through it.

Following that tough match, you will be the Major Circuit champion!

World Circuit - Rome, Italy
---------------------------

1. Fight: Gou Hayato (ゴウ ハヤト)
Information: Your fight against this karate man will be tough, since he
is well-versed in both punching and kicking. It will be a
brutal battle, especially if you get caught up in his grasp
and get beat down, but if you can keep up, you will be fine.

2. Fight: Shouryuu (しょうりゅう)
Information: This fighter is another tough martial artist who is able to
knock you down fast, as you would expect by now. This guy is
a fan of aerial attacks, so keep an eye out for that so you
                can dodge those moves accordingly.

3. Fight: Raiden Ryuu (らいでん りゅう)
Information: The final guy you face in the circuit is going to put up a
tough fight, but surprisingly is not as quick as some of the
others you faced thus far. If you give him the chance, you
will go down fast, but if you are quick and attentive, this
should be like any other fight.

After you win, you will be the World Circuit champ! Not for long though,
since the Mad Warrior will appear to challenge you to one last fight!

4. Fight: Mad Warrior (マッド ウォリアー)
Information: The very last fighter you must face is certainly a tough one
as you expect. He is fast, can beat you down if you are not
quick to block him, and tends to block a lot of your own
shots. Just treat it like any other fight, attacking and
defending as necessary, and you will be able to win this one
                and retain your championship title!
