1. Introduction
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
I'm sure everyone these days remembers good ole' Donkey Kong, the
game that introduced platforming and Mario, and started Nintendo's
domination over Atari and Intellivison back in the mid-80's. There were
two sequels to Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong 3. While
Donkey Kong Jr. followed the platform gameplay of the original somewhat,
Donkey Kong 3 went in a whole new direction, and most gamers shunned it
because of it.
While it may not be as instant a classic as the previous two games,
Donkey Kong 3 should still be considered as one of the classic Nintendo
arcade games, even if it doesn't include Mario (What a mistake that was.
Who wants to play as someone named STANLEY?). This FAQ should help out
with any questions you have. Enjoy.

2. Overview And Controls
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
You are Stanley the gardener, who has to look after a few plants while
his master is gone. While gardening SEEMS like an easy elementary-school
diploma kind of job, it's actually fraught with pitfalls and perils. Seems
that giant apes like to attack gardeners, and gigantic insects have
gathered together to steal the flowers that Stanley is trying to protect.
Mother Nature is not a kind lover, and it's up to Stanley to show her
who's the man of the house and protect his master's garden so he doesn't
get put out on the street. There will be "plant-y" of excitement, and your
thumb will turn green from all the time you spend with this game (My humor
is so "punny".BWAHAHA.)

3. Differences Between A-Game and B-Game
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
While the makers of the game state the B Game as "experts only", the
only differences between the two games are the time that events occur. The
B-Game is harder than the A-Game because most events occur quicker than in
the A-Game. The differences are shown below.
==========================================================================
A-Game - From his starting position, Donkey Kong reaches the flower
garden in 30 seconds if you do not shoot him on Level 1 or 3
From his starting position, Donkey Kong reaches the flower
garden in 8 seconds if you do not shoot him on Level 2
B-Game - From his starting position, Donkey Kong reaches the flower
garden in 20 seconds if you do not shoot him on Level 1 or 3
From his starting position, Donkey Kong reaches the flower
garden in 6 seconds if you do not shoot him on Level 2
==========================================================================
A-Game - Slugs will start appearing 8 seconds after the level begins
B-Game - Slugs will start appearing 6 seconds after the level begins
==========================================================================
A-Game - 30 shots continuous to beat Donkey Kong on Level 1 and 3
20 shots continuous to beat Donkey Kong on Level 2
B-Game - 40 shots continuous to beat Donkey Kong on Level 1 and 3
30 shots continuous to beat Donkey Kong on Level 2

4. Point Values
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Since the game only has three levels with no variation except for
different enemies, as were most games back in the days, you can't
technically beat the game. If you get to phase 99, the game restarts at
phase 1, which is pretty stupid. However, you could always try to beat
your high score, and the handy-dandy list below will help you out in
deciding what enemies to kill for the most points.

5. Enemies And The One Power-Up
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
You are facing two threats to your garden in this game: the great ape
known as Donkey Kong, and the myriad of insects that he riles up by
hitting their nests. Why he is hanging onto two sticks, and he is
vulnerable to physical pain from pesticide, is beyond me. However, that's
Nintendo logic for you. Anywho, here's a rundown about the enemies you'll
face.
==========================================================================
-- Donkey Kong --
He came from deep within the jungle...crossed oceans and
desert...fought many a wild beast...just to stomp on your flower garden.
THE FIEND! While this crime may look like a lesser crime than kidnapping a
princess, it's no less heinous. However, pesticides have a direct effect
on monkeys, it seems, instead of just the long-term effect of giving them
cancer, so you'll be able to fight back.
Donkey Kong is your main target for each level, as the only way to
end the level is by sending him packing up those vines again. By hitting
him in the behind with pesticides, he slowly climbs back up these vines,
not wanting anymore DDT up his hole. However, if you let up on the
pesticide, he starts to climb back down. You have to balance between
blasting insects and ape, all within the time limit.
Throughout the first ten phases or so, I suggest just concentrating
everything on Donkey Kong. There aren't any dangerous bugs out yet, and by
blasting him, you'll get through the first few phases much quicker.
However, when Stag Beetles and Moths start appearing, it's time to balance
between the two. I suggest hitting Donkey Kong so he goes up about
halfway, then firing at the bugs. Once you cleared all immediate threats,
concentrate on Donkey Kong again. I would only pay full attention to the
bugs if I only have one flower left. Otherwise, as you get to larger
phases, blasting Donkey Kong instead of saving flowers might be the best
way to survive instead of fighting the exploding, stinger-shooting insects
in the later levels. Be careful in phase 17 and every Forest phase after
that, as Donkey Kong will begin to throw coconuts at you when you get him
far enough up the vines. So, in conclusion, Donkey Kong is Public Enemy
#1, Insects come in second.
==========================================================================
-- Insects --
As if big monkeys weren't a problem, he riles up these bad boys to
do some more damage. Insects come in all different shapes and sizes, with
all different kinds of powers to mess up Stanley. However, I personally
think Stanley is a pansy. Bee stings and moths landing on you doesn't
sound like poison to me, but I guess it is in a world where pesticides
will make monkeys cower in fear. Below is a little bestiary for all those
pesky bugs in your path and how to deal with them.
__________________________________________________________________________
++ Beespy ++
Appear In: Level 1
Disappear In: Level 9
Beespies have a straight-down flight pattern, with minimum swaying
and homing ability. They are easy to avoid and shoot, and they are meant
to pick up flowers. They have no offensive weapons until they have picked
up a flower. Once they have, they can shoot stingers much like their
tougher cousin, the Buzzbee.
__________________________________________________________________________
++ Creepy The Snake ++
Appear In: Level 1
Disappear In: Never
Creepy The Snakes are a major annoyance. They move slowly across
vines in the Forest Level, down trees in the other two. If they run into
you, I suppose the bite Stanley and he dies. If you shoot Creepy, he just
stands there with his mouth agape. He blocks your shots with his body,
making it harder to shoot other bugs or Donkey Kong. I always try to shoot
Creepy before he gets even close to Donkey Kong, because once he blocks
your shot you have a good chance of losing the level. When faced with
multiple Creepys, don't even waste your ammo on them. It will just lead to
more obstacles :(
__________________________________________________________________________
++ Queen Bee ++
Appear In: Level 3
Disappear In: Never
Queen Bees are bigger than Beespys, with a swaying, slightly-homing
flight pattern. They take two shots to kill, but explode into shrapnel
when you kill them! This is very, VERY bad, and hard to avoid. Also, their
job is to attack you, so it's not as easy to avoid them. By attacking
directly below them, however, you can avoid the shrapnel. Just be sure not
to move when you kill them, and it should pass harmlessly by.
__________________________________________________________________________
++ Buttifly ++
Appear In: Level 6
Disappear In: Level 9
Buttiflies are line-shaped bugs that fly in a circle while drifting
down towards you. They only take one shot to kill, and they have a
medium homing ability. They move slowly, and you should be able to send
Donkey Kong back up the vines before they even appear :P However, their
cousins, the Moths, are a much tougher opponent.
__________________________________________________________________________
++ Buzzbee ++
Appear In: Level 9
Disappear In: Never
Buzzbees become the main insect in Level 9, replacing the Beespies.
They are smaller than the Beespies and much faster. They aren't meant to
attack you but instead to get the flowers, much like the Beespies. They
also have the same long-range attack as the Beespies, the shooting stinger
when they have grabbed a flower.
__________________________________________________________________________
++ Stag Beetles ++
Appear In: Level 12
Disappear In: Never
Stag Beetles are the biggest threats to you up to level 15. They
hover around you until they reach a platform that's level to you, and
then rush straight at you extremely fast. This is deadly, especially
when you're trying to get Donkey Kong up the rope and they are
charging at you at the same time. Take the time to shoot the Stag
Beetles on their way down, before they reach the platforms. Too many of
them means a quick death for Stanley.
__________________________________________________________________________
++ Moths ++
Appear In: Level 15
Disappear In: Never
Moths are the toughest enemies in this game, and there are so
many reasons why. They have excellent homing ability, and they will not
stop circling and attacking you until you or them is destroyed. Also, they
can pick up flowers, so you'll have to fight them no matter what. Aiming
can be difficult, so I always aim to the left of where they are, as they
will usually circle into the shot. Be sure to hit them hard, and hit them
fast.

The Power Spray
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
There is an upgrade to your DDT spray, the Power Spray. The Power
Spray is usually on the vine to the right of Donkey Kong after you have
just died or at the beginning of the game. If you spray Donkey Kong up the
vine enough, it will drop to the ground. Be sure to grab it, as not only
does it have a much longer range than the normal spray, it also kills
every insect, INCLUDING Creepys( HUZZAH!!! ). The effects of the Power
Spray usually wears off after about a phase and a half.

6. Walkthrough
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
There are three different types of phases in the game: Original,
Pyramid, and Forest. They never change throughout the game, except for new
insects up to phase 15, and Donkey Kong starts to throw coconuts in phase
17. Therefore, the same strategy can be used for each phase after 15,
despite the high number of the phases. Below, I've drawn a little ASCII
art of the phase, including a walkthrough for each phase type.

==========================================================================
The Original phase is the easiest phase to complete, due to the large
area you have to move within this phase, and the fact you can shoot Donkey
Kong from any ledge without any obstacles. You can hit Donkey Kong from
all three levels on the platform, but you can't finish him unless you are
on the middle or upper platform. You'll encounter this phase two times out
of four, and all types of enemies will appear on it.
_______________
Phase 1,3,5,7
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
You'll find Whirlygigs in abundance during these levels, and not
quite as many Queen Bees or Creepies. The Whirlygigs shouldn't pose too
much of a threat, as they seem to keep to themselves most of the time and
pick flowers. Making Donkey Kong climb is very easy at this point, so I
suggest focusing most to all of your attacks upon him. You should be able
to finish these four levels with perfect scores.
_______________
Phase 9,11,13
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Now is when the middle platform is your most valuable asset. Since it
allows you to shoot Donkey Kong while not staying too close to the hive, I
would try to stay on this platform until you are about to finish Donkey
Kong off. When Stag Beetles appear in Level 13, remember to shoot them
before they come near your middle platform stronghold.
____________
Phase 15 +
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Every single insect in the game can and will appear, so be ready. The
middle platform is not as safe as it used to be, so I suggest switching
between the lower and middle platform. Moths tend to circle near the upper
platform, so I suggest not even touching it unless you have a VERY clear
screen. Just remember that Stag Beetles are your biggest threat on these
types of phases, due to their charging abilities.

==========================================================================
The Pyramid phase is the exact same thing as the Original phase,
except for one key thing: the middle platform doesn't give you a clear
shot at Donkey Kong. This is a handicap, since it forces you to use the
upper platform, which is very close to the hives and forces you into
combat with the largest amount of insects.
___________
Phase 4,8
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Middle platform, scmiddle platform. Who needs 'em while the
competition is so easy? During these two levels, you probably won't even
miss that good ole middle platform. Climb to the upper one and blast away.
The insects won't even reach the flowers before Donkey Kong is climbing
back up those vines again.
__________
Phase 12
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Gah, your first encounter with Stag Beetles. Moving from the upper
platform to the middle platform to avoid the charges is a good idea, and
then just move back up to the upper platform to continue firing. With a
little luck, hitting Donkey Kong continuously won't pose too much of a
problem.
____________
Phase 16 +
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Suddenly, these levels turn deadly, as Moths put a whole new spin on
things. The upper platform is constantly being bombarded, and you can
almost never shoot Donkey Kong enough to send him up, just keep him where
he is. What's the secret ? Why, the Power Spray. If you can rack up 50,000
points over three levels beforehand, you can die and receive a Power Spray
for this level. Cheap? Yes. Effective? Definitely yes. HOWEVER, if you
want to do it the fair way, jump to the upper platform, shoot Donkey Kong
for one and a half seconds about. Jump down afterwards, blast any bugs
near you at this point, and then jump back up and continue the pattern.

==========================================================================
The Forest levels are a refreshing change from the other two similar
levels, as it poses a whole new set of challenges. Creepys crawl the vines
between you and Donkey Kong, and if you shoot one, they stop, and block
all further shots at Donkey Kong. REALLY annoying
___________
Phase 2,6
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The only real threat during the first two levels are the Creepies.
Shoot too many, and you can't even aim at Donkey Kong. I suggest during
these first two levels to concentrate everything on Donkey Kong,
especially in phase 2 since you should have the Power Spray. If you do
this, the Creepies won't have time to get to the middle.
_____________
Phase 10,14
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Hit the Creepies as soon as they appear on the edges of the vines.
Stay on the second platform, and hit Donkey Kong when the Creepies are
incapacitated. Watch for Queen Bees, as they tend to appear a lot during
this level. By hitting the Creepies early, they never have a chance to get
in your way.
___________
Phase 17+
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Woah. There are no other insects except for Moths and Creepies, and
this is definitely a bad thing. The only good thing is that Donkey Kong is
on shortened vines. However, once you start hitting him, don't stop until
he's gone. Why? He starts to throw coconuts now. The coconuts aren't too
hard to avoid by themselves, but coupled with Moths, they provide quite a
wallop. I always used the middle platform, and only retreated when
absolutely necessary. If you have more trouble with this phase than the
Pyramid phases, just use the strategy I described in that section.

7. Tips
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
1.) Jump as you shoot. You still have to watch out for bugs, but the
firing rate is increased by a third. This is a great help, especially
on levels when you only have one flower left and you need to finish
off Donkey Kong.
2.) Ignore the insects in the early levels. Just avoid them if they get
in your way, because they pose no real threat until level 9 or so.
3.) When you need points for an extra life, don't shoot Donkey Kong all
the way up, just halfway, This gives you some time to score some easy
points shooting insects.
4.) You may want to die on purpose on some levels, if you have enough
lives, because when you come back, you'll get the Power Spray, making
the level much easier
