Function. It's a holdover, imo, from the logical positivist
  movement of the early 20th century and its effects are still
  everywhere. I'm not saying I agree that it's immoral, but it's
  certainly a strong value in many cultures. Myth of Progress and
  all that. How often does someone say, "Get to the point?" That's
  utilitarianism. == I'm still working on the model that works for
  me. I haven't found a pre-existing one that suits me perfectly.
  Yet, aspects of each seem to work in their own appropriate
  times. Even "it depends" doesn't cover it all because I have
  some absolutes as well. So, yeah, work in progress here. == I've
  found an "apophatic" approach, so to speak, works well for me. I
  look for the flaws without throwing out the whole thing.
  Example: Logic. I use it. But can't base my life on it. There's
  many others. That approach seems suitable. I may build-up with
  something but it always has a grounding of a "scooping away" of
  a whole while building within, rather than building in a realm
  of notingness as a backdrop. ==
