Wintersmith by Larry Heyl CC-BY
based on the novel by Terry Pratchett
The Wintersmith comes at the end of the fall
Painting windows and dropping white
The animals hide when they hear his call
So cold in the middle of the night
So cold in the middle of the night.
I didn't know there was another Morris Dance
When the witch took me up on the hill
It was all so quiet and where was the clown?
Dancing in those spaces left to fill
I thought "Why not?", and then "I will."
So I danced, danced, danced with the Wintersmith
I think I gave him a surprise
He never knew a girl like me
He was ancient but not very wise
He was ancient but not very wise
I got another letter from that boy back home
I know he's leaving some things out
The Wintersmith sculpts me in every flake
I wonder what it's all about
I wonder what love's all about.
The winter was hard and when Spring came
He wouldn't get out of the way
Summer was locked in the underworld
As winter stayed another day
The Wintersmith wouldn't go away.
Yes I danced danced danced with the Wintersmith
And he wouldn't stop dancing because
He never knew a girl like me
And he didn't know what love was
No he didn't know what love was.
The fire burned high as I melted him away
Trying to make spring come
The lambs were dying and my brother was lost
And I had him on the run
But the Wintersmith wasn't done.
He took me to his castle of ice
It all seemed so hit or miss
Sometimes he was cold but sometimes he was nice
So I ended it all with a kiss
I ended it all with a kiss.
Yes I danced danced danced with the Wintersmith
As I learned all about love
It was a hard winter and spring wouldn't come
But when the push came to the shove
I taught him a bit about love.
I taught him a bit about love.
