POSITION DETAILS
The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, founded in 2006, has become nationally recognized for its innovative programs. The only public graduate journalism school in the northeastern U.S., it prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism.
As the profession continues to reinvent itself for the digital age, the Newmark J-School is at the forefront of equipping the next generation of journalists with the reporting, writing, interactive, technological, and entrepreneurial skills they need to find stories and tell them effectively. The school currently offers a Master of Arts in Journalism, a unique bilingual M.A. in Journalism for students fluent in English and Spanish, and the nation's first M.A. in Engagement Journalism.
The Executive Director of Communications and Marketing is part of the senior management of the school, reporting to the Dean. This administrator will oversee the school’s communications, marketing, and external relations functions. The portfolio includes responsibility for publicity and media relations, recruiting and fundraising marketing, website strategy and content, social media outreach, branding, events and promotional assets.
The duties and responsibilities of the position will include, but are not limited to:
Leads the development of brand-building communication strategies, goals and objectives, in order to recruit the best students, faculty and staff and to engage the donor community;
Oversees the creation and execution of all marketing and communications materials to achieve the School’s communications goals and objectives. Such materials include, but are not limited, to Admissions, Development and Events;
Supervises a team of social media, editing and video production staff in support of external communications;
Develops and oversees an events strategy –conference, panels, film screenings, etc.– to advance the goals and objectives of the School;
Oversees the coordination of all events, working closely with the staff in Facilities, Audio/Visual, Public Safety and Events;
Advises the Dean and senior administrators regarding current and potential community and outreach issues and concerns;
Handles all press inquiries about the School;
Serves as primary liaison for the School to facilitate partnerships with external organizations;
Builds and maintains effective working partnerships with various Central Office and University-wide entities, such as those working on legislative, digital marketing and communications strategies;
Conducts research and analyzes data in order to develop external relationships that support the School’s goals and objectives;
Oversees all budgets related to the School’s communications, marketing and external relations functions;
Works with the Dean on activities related to the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY Foundation.
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law.
All CUNY employees must reside within a commutable distance to their campus.
Qualifications:
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below.
A preferred candidate should have:
Master’s degree in journalism, communications, or marketing.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
A minimum of five (5) years of experience in communications or marketing.
Creative and analytical thinking to implement best practices in communications and marketing.
A minimum of five (5) years of related experience in a management or leadership role.
Journalism and/or social media background.
Exceptional interpersonal and social skills.
Strong organizational and project management skills.
Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
