Advice for Gov. DeSantis: Try doing your job in Florida [1]

Dear Governor DeSantis,

Welcome back to Iowa! Pay no attention to those national news stories saying your poll numbers are plummeting. You could be the Iowa surprise this Jan. 15, 2024.

I do have some advice, however.

The state of Florida consists of many folks who came from somewhere else. The west coast, or Gulf Coast, is where Midwesterners tended to flock, whereas the east coast is home to many from the eastern seaboard.

Hurricane Ian devasted the Gulf Coast of Florida last September, and residents and visitors are still dealing with the aftermath.

You could campaign for the Iowa Caucuses from Fort Myers to Sarasota without leaving your state. Check out condo complexes along the beaches, and on any given day, you can find an Iowa Party taking place one night of the season.

While you try to incite anti-immigrant hatred, builders say they can’t repair the roofs and install drywall because they don’t have enough workers.

There is a direct flight from Des Moines to Punta Gorda on Allegiant Air. That means plenty of Iowans are still reeling from the aftermath of Hurricane Ian and government ineptitude in getting a simple permit to replace drywall.

You looked great on TV during the actual hurricane, in command. Gubernatorial, almost.

Almost.

It was enough for some to forget about you attacking one of the state’s largest employers, Disney, for being inclusive and welcoming. Or, as you like to say, “woke.”

What does that mean to you, by the way? “Woke.”

But I digress.

So, back to the direct flights from Des Moines to Punta Gorda. You could catch a one-way flight from here this weekend for less than $200. You might have some interesting conversations on that flight. Punta Gorda is where Hurricane Ian made landfall.

As you travel Iowa, you could run across a potential voter who might ask why they are still waiting for a permit to replace a tiny bit of drywall. They can only sell or rent the place once it’s fixed, so this government ineptitude costs them thousands. Mind you; Hurricane Ian hit last September, so they’ve been waiting close to a year.

These Iowans (and Floridians) want you to govern, thank you very much, and spend less time roaming around Iowa, harassing Disney, or shipping immigrants off to Martha’s Vinyard as a political stunt. They like Disney. And they want their roofs fixed, please, and some immigrants want to help.

Please don’t throw up your hands and say it’s a county problem or someone else’s fault.

These Iowa caucus-goers only have to look to Pennsylvania to see how branches of government can cooperate to benefit the people they serve.

Remember that tanker accident that caused a segment of one of the most traveled highways in the country, Interstate 95, to be shut down?

Immediately, President Joe Biden coordinated with the Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, (yes, he’s gay and woke). Plus, Josh Shapiro, governor of Pennsylvania, must be woke, too, because he’s a Democrat. They flew into action, and traffic flowed again in less than a few weeks. Imagine what intention and service, and cooperation can do.

So, not that you asked my advice, I suggest you demonstrate you can govern your state before asking to govern the country. And while you’re at it, your state is one of the most impacted by climate change.

Existential threat definition (from www.dictionary.com):

WHAT DOES EXISTENTIAL THREAT MEAN?

An existential threat is a threat to something’s very existence—when the continued being of something is at stake or in danger. It is used to describe threats to actual living things as well to nonliving thing things, such as a country or an ideology.

When a major insurance company leaves the state of Florida, citing the reality that hurricanes will only strengthen due to warming sea temperatures, and someone from your administration calls the company ‘woke’ for leaving? Well, I guess that is the definition of “woke,” the opposite of being asleep.

Perhaps it is time to wake up.
