Most mothers might enjoy Mothers’ Day by going out for dinner with their families. Others may enjoy a day at a public garden where they can enjoy the spring blooms. However, my in-laws are not typical people. When hashing out how hubby’s mother would enjoy Mothers’ Day with his mother and his siblings, the decision was to go to the local swap meet.
Hubby’s brother and his wife regularly tour this swap meet. He will admit that he has an affinity for junk. I actually went to this swap meet on Super Bowl Sunday with them, Hubby, and his mother, and found it to be extremely depressing: people who are clearly struggling economically trying to sell random crap in order to help make ends meet. Most sellers were asking for a pittance for their goods, and buyers would still try to talk them down, since the buyers are also hurting. On Super Bowl Sunday, there weren’t many sellers or buyers present, partly because we got there late, and partly because it was Super Bowl Sunday, and a lot of regulars presumably had other plans.
This Sunday was different. We still got there late (8:30 AM, but the meet started at 5:00 AM), but there were more people there this time. There wasn’t much improvement in the quality of the merchandise, though there was an improvement in its variety. Hubby’s brother’s wife and I both spotted a fur-trimmed set of handcuffs a moment before two young women swooped in to buy them. (I’m not asking any questions.) The only item that I found moderately tempting was a small psaltry (the kind you pluck). I didn’t buy it because I knew I would never learn to play it.
It’s a weird experience, a view of the rock-bottom of our economic system. Nonetheless, Hubby’s family loves junk, and this is the sort of place to find it.

From Paul A:
I have to nominate Justin423's comment in KeithDB's post about the ICE arrest of Newark mayor Ras Baraka by masked "Homeland Security Investigations" agents in a public space after he had already left a private prison compound leased to ICE. Baraka has been going there regularly to serve citations for city code violations. Justin423's suggestion should be adopted by all local law enforcement.
From belinda ridgewood:
In this morning's Abbreviated Pundit Roundup by Greg Dworkin, the subject of the appalling ICE arrest in Worcester MA came up. Onomastic offered a quote that probably needs to get written on post-it notes, with attribution and date prominent, and stuck all over, just in case anyone's confused.
