Suspect arrested in arson fire that forced Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, family to flee residence

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A man scaled an iron security fence in the middle of the night, eluded police and broke into the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion where he set a fire that left significant damage and forced Gov. Josh Shapiro, his family and guests to evacuate the building, authorities said Sunday. The man, captured later in the day, will face charges of attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson and aggravated assault, authorities said.✂️

A comment from Atrios , which I found quite funny.

The Kleptocracy Presidency

As the stock markets crashed on Friday, April 4, Donald Trump left Washington, D.C. He did not go to New York to consult with Wall Street. He did not go to Dover, Delaware, to receive the bodies of four American servicemen, killed in an accident while serving in Lithuania. Instead, he went to Florida, where he visited his Doral golf resort, which was hosting the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tournament, and stayed at his Mar-a-Lago club, where many tournament fans and sponsors were staying too. His private businesses took precedence over the business of the nation.✂️

This is a gift link.

Is Donald Trump Channeling Liz Truss and Chairman Mao?

Less than three months into his second term, Donald Trump conjures up the image of a three-headed hydra graced with the faces of Liz Truss, Britain’s failed prime minister; Chairman Mao Zedong, China’s despot ruler; and Marie Antoinette, the 18th-century queen who told the French to eat cake. Meanwhile, Gladiator, Director Ridley Scott’s Academy Award-winning tale of a debauched and self-venerating emperor remains the movie for our times. Trump-imposed tariffs and executive orders have triggered a global stock market meltdown. Despite a pause in the fall, there appears to be no end to the recklessness and uncertainty the 47th president has unleashed. “Stagflation,” “recession,” and “inflation” have re-entered the lexicon. In a matter of days, the president destroyed $5.4 trillion in market value. ✂️ “Golfing While the World Burns,” one headline read as Trump golfed at his Doral club in Florida while the markets tumbled. As the U.S. and the world nursed its financial wounds, Trump won a passel of Trump golf course championships playing against the equivalent of the Washington Generals, the always-losing nemesis of the Harlem Globetrotters. And when the septuagenarian wasn’t golfing, he raised money at Mar-a-Lago. ✂️

I included that last bit because it gave me a distinct chuckle.

Fed up with attacks, Minnesota Republicans wage war against far-right group

Top officials in the Minnesota Republican Party recently gathered to take an unprecedented vote: formally condemning a right-wing group that has antagonized GOP elected officials for years. Action 4 Liberty was repeatedly attacking Republicans in the divided Minnesota House for compromising with Democrats, while also encouraging “grassroots Patriots” to oust party officers at local conventions and replace them with hardline activists. The state GOP’s executive committee declared that leaders of Action 4 Liberty are more focused on “tearing down Republicans” than helping the party win elections: “The leadership of the organization instead works only to enrich themselves, attack those actually making a difference, and claim victories they had nothing to do with,” read the declaration brought forward by committee member Bobby Benson, who’s the state chief of staff for Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer.✂️

Suspect arrested outside UnitedHealthcare campus in Minnetonka

A suspect is in custody after an incident near UnitedHealthcare’s headquarters in Minnetonka drew a large police presence Monday morning. Police have not said what led up to the situation, but in a posting on X said there was no threat to the public and “we are continuing to clear the scene at this time.” Events unfolded just after 11 a.m., when an intruder was spotted in a parking lot near the campus in the 9700 block of Health Care Lane. Several agencies responded to the scene, said city spokesman Andy Wittenborg. “The call was about somebody who should not be on the campus,” he said. The male suspect was arrested without incident about an hour later, police said. No one was hurt, Wittenborg added.✂️
