REFUGE - A Way We Can ALL Help [1]

This will be short and sweet — I ran across this site and checked it out. By all accounts I could find, this is a legitimate site serving an important purpose.

The folks at REFUGE have a simple goal; they want to maintain a registry of public restrooms that are safe for use by transgender, intersex, and nonconforming folks. From their website:

What is REFUGE restrooms? Refuge Restrooms is a web application that seeks to provide safe restroom access for transgender, intersex, and gender nonconforming individuals. Users can search for restrooms by proximity to a search location, add new restroom listings, as well as comment and rate existing listings. We’re trans led and seek to create a community focused not only on finding existing safe restroom access, but also advocating for transgender, intersex, and gender nonconforming people’s safety.

Entries may be an explicitly welcoming location, unisex bathrooms, a single-person bathroom in a gas station, or anything in between. Visitors to their website can verify and comment on existing entries, add new entries, or both. They have a free Android app, but the iOS app linked on their site isn’t showing up at this time. (If you’re a programmer or website designer, they provide a free API for anonymous access to their database.)

This seems an easy way for all of us to give real help to folks who are struggling with this simple part of everyday life. I’ve already entered and/or validated multiple entries in my area; it only takes a few minutes. Please consider adding “safe bathrooms” in your area to REFUGE’s database, no matter where you live; one never knows where someone will need a safe bathroom.
