DK Quilt Guild: 100 Day Project [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-02-09

DK Quilt Guild: A place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too. We NEED diarists!

Your diary can be elaborate and full of photos, a simple story of your own quilting history or that of someone you love, a discussion of a current project or a technique you're learning, new adventures... You could post quilt retreat-day recipes (things like crockpot meals, so food appears without much attention from you)…

We could do show and tell or open thread, also, but either way, we need diarists to host. It is EASY if you're willing to take the chance. We NEED diarists!

I’d been linking up with some art groups online… not something I’ve done much of before, because I barely have time to do art, let alone spend time chatting about it. But it feels like I (we) need more community these days. Anyway, I got an invite to participate in The 100 Day Project. It starts on Feb 23rd and it’s very free-form: choose your media, choose how you work it. Some folks do something similar every day and end up with 100 items; some work long term on a big project. I decided it was a good prod to get me to really work on a family history quilt I’ve been noodling about, sketching (badly) some ideas and gathering fabric and other materials.

I’m not great at sketching

I plan on multi-media, including gel plate printing, embroidery, painting with fabric paint. And since 3 months is a long time, I’m breaking it up into sampler/test quiltlets the first month, then making sections the 2nd, then hopefully having enough to pull together in the last stretch.

I’ve already printed ancestors’ old photos on transfer sheets, and found some cool Celtic fabric on Spoonflower

Gonna cut into strips as borders and dividers

I’ve gathered the other fabrics that might work:

I played with using fabric craypas to do rubbing with some stencils I have. Some work and some don’t:

One downside is that the main place to post is Instagram; I’m not going there (too many places to check already!) but you can post on FB also. And some people post daily — that’ll be too much for me. So I’ll post maybe once a week, but still it’ll be encouragement. Anyone can join up. www.the100dayproject.org There’s an artist, Roben Marie, who has a free PDF workbook to help organize/plan:www.robenmariestudio.com/…

and somewhere she has samples from her 8 years of doing this — ah — it’s in her prep webinar (starting about 20 minutes in) for this year: www.youtube.com/…

Some definitely do fabric work. This one from another artist is a fabric stitched book ; very quilt-like.

(One silly/scary thing is that I searched YouTube to find videos on this — and what kept coming up was Project 2025!)

This week I played with another small quiltlet, using some odd media. Except for the twigs, nothing is sewn down. I used fabric markers for the names; that will be done better if I use it:

I’ve printed some transparencies that I might attach to parts of the quilt… just playing around.

So, anyway, since I was doing this diary, I thought I’d mention this — hopefully I’ll have some things to show you all starting in March.

What have you been doing this week?
