Enough of the circus!
CALL YOUR SENATOR TODAY AND DEMAND BLANKET HOLDS ON ALL NOMINATIONS. Republicans pulled that crap ROUTINELY in the minority. Republicans BRAGGED about their holds. Then, they used them for fundraising.
We will overlook the abuse by Republicans during the Obama years. We don't have time for all that, and there was a lot. Many of President Joe Biden's nominations faced tremendous delays or were placed on hold by Republican senators. Here are some notable examples:
Military Promotions: There were instances where Republicans held up military promotions. For example, Senator Tommy Tuberville placed holds on hundreds of military nominations, specifically blocking the promotions of over 400 military nominees for nearly a year, while retaining holds on about 11 four-star generals.
Judicial appointments: Republicans placed a total of 20 holds on President Biden's judicial nominees during his presidency. These holds were part of the broader political strategy to influence the confirmation process.
Diplomatic appointments: Republican senators placed holds on ALL State Department nominees, specifically targeting the confirmation of over 80 Biden State Department nominees. This includes individual holds by senators like Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz, who used these tactics to delay the confirmation process.
Cabinet Nominations: Alejandro Mayorkas faced delays in his nomination for Secretary of Homeland Security, primarily due to holds placed by Republican senators like Josh Hawley.
These examples reflect a coordinated strategy by Republicans to use procedural maneuvers to delay or block confirmations as leverage to promote their political agenda. Senate Dems need to call for blanket holds, not hearings.
CALL YOUR SENATOR TODAY! Demand they put an end to this circus and DENY unanimous consent on EVERY nominee at ALL levels as long as this administration continues to flout the law
What is a “hold” in the Senate?
In the United States Senate, a hold is a parliamentary procedure permitted by the Standing Rules of the United States Senate which allows one or more Senators to prevent a motion to proceed with consideration of a certain manner from reaching a vote on the Senate floor, as no motion may be brought for consideration on the Senate floor without unanimous consent (unless cloture is invoked on the said motion). If the Senator provides notice privately to their party leadership of their intent (and the party leadership agrees), then the hold is known as a secret or anonymous hold. If the Senator objects on the Senate floor or the hold is publicly revealed, then the hold is more generally known as a Senatorial hold.
This means that every vote and every nomination grinds to crawl. It makes every nominee a battle. They don’t have the time, talent or resources to fight every battle. Call your senator and demand they put the brakes on this circus.
