Time Bomb Y2K from HBO [1]

HBO is coming out with a documentary on Y2K. Showing the hype preceding Y2K. Like the hyped 2012 end of the world that was used to generate views/money.
This is my story of that time. Please feel free to tell yours.
My background is a retired industrial electrician at a major chemical plant and part time computer geek. I specialized in the plants back up electrical system. I.E the uninterruptible power supply Just like the UPS battery back up power you may have at your house. But a lot bigger.
Prior to the end of the year I was deluged with questions about people’s personal computers. Standard answers were update your computer. If you have a finance program do a full back up just in case. Don’t worry too much about companies. They are applying patches and doing back ups also.
In my work with the UPS I knew it wouldn’t have a problem. Over the years I worked there I had about 200 hours of training. Plus the years I worked on them. But after all the hype people didn’t understand or trust me when I told them it wouldn’t be a problem. Even the electrical engineers were worried. The system would only shutdown in a fault condition or by manually shutting it down. And even then it had automatic backup power transfer. The only thing that had a date was internal alarms saying if there was a problem. The alarms were sent to the main computer by a set of contacts nothing more. The only way you knew what it thought the date was by using Telenet to connect in. That had no affect on operation.
Anyways I sat in the shop overnight browsing the web and BS’ing with coworkers making overtime.
In closing don’t let hype take you over. Stop and think what you know as fact. All the rest is opinions or meant just to attract attention. This year it will be a lot of political hype. Take a breath, relax, and just think facts of what’s happening.
We know the election is coming. There’s the crimes dipshit Donnie is indicted on. All the opinions are just that. If you want to do something get involved. Whether donating or supporting the people you want elected. Don’t let it get you down. Take positive action. Don’t let it be extra stress in your New Year. Appreciate the people around you.
