It’s the time of the year when people return gifts in hopes of getting a refund. It may also be a time when scammers are likewise trying to cash in.
But, if they do and you get propositioned, don’t fall for it, don’t allow yourself to get roped in.
As I mentioned in an earlier posting, my dad was scammed into turning over 7,000 bucks. He was preyed on, I believe, because he had dementia.
I also believe I was the target of a scam at one time.
What happened was when I looked at one of my credit-card-purchase statements, I noticed a charge for a specified dollar amount. It was money I knew I didn’t owe.
I immediately got in contact with the financial institution that issued the credit card and inquired as to what that particular charge was all about.
The person with whom I was speaking explained that in the mailing envelope with a previous credit-card statement, was also a check, that if I so chose to cash, I could get x number of dollars and some change back.
As the conversation progressed it was also explained that I had cashed the issued check and that because I had done so, I was being billed that dollar amount that I alluded to above.
My response was that I never cashed or deposited that issued check and tore it up.
That claim was rejected by the person with whom I was speaking, same said person declaring if not demanding that the money owed must be paid.
I rebuffed that declaration defending my assertion that I tore the issued check up in question and threw it away.
I further explained that the burden was that of the financial institution’s to prove that I had cashed the check as it was alleged that I had done.
After that, I heard nothing else about it.
T’is the season to be jolly. Don’t allow scammers to be the only ones to be joyful this time of year, should you get propositioned by one or several.
Please be alert to their deceitful ways, again, if targeted.
