The Cold War was in full swing. We were told we were losing. Russia had beat us to space. Russian primary school children were learning math that even our college students couldn't hope to comprehend. Drills for the inevitable communist nuclear attack were practiced monthly. If you didn't hate Russia and every commie everywhere, you were a commie.

President Kennedy advised that we should know our enemies. Learn about them. Read what they write. In a grade school classroom I asked if this meant we should learn Russian, the enemies language. The teacher laughed. The children reacted, they distorted my name, called me a commie. Welcome to Daily Kos. Stay in line, stfu and god forbid you suggest anyone should read what our enemies say.
