Helping Humpday at Street Prophets Coffee Hour [1]

Welcome to Helping Humpday at Street Prophets Coffee Hour, where politics meets up with religion, art, science, nature, and life. Come in, have a cuppa and a cookie (or three!) and join us.

Helping Humpday was one of the gifts created for us by bfitzinAR. It was taken over by DixieCollie, who also left unexpectedly. Now njm5000 is the kind person who compiles the list of community needs. It’s still here, a place where Kossacks can share and show caring.

Here’s hoping all the fireworks were used up last night. We can get some sleep, our pets can relax and feel safe. Hoping nothing burned down where you are, and that no one was injured.

Today is the in-between day for me. Yesterday was the holiday. Tomorrow is my daughter’s birthday. Usually she would visit me at this time, coming from Dallas to NE Kansas. But COVID ended that. Now that there are mitigations (mostly the ones she and I take), she’d like to come again. But things are different now. Our favorite uncle died in February of 2022 (his wife died in 2010) so that’s one less person to visit. It’s far too hot to do outdoor things, and who wants to sit around inside? We don’t go out to eat anymore unless we can eat on a patio. So this year, our visit will probably be in October. There’s a local, large Renaissance Festival. I can no longer walk, but daughter and grandson (named Aashir, oddly enough) can do that. We may meet one of my friends and her husband for lunch or dinner (outdoors!). You know, things we can do and still take the virus seriously.

Am I isolated? Well, yeah. But you know what? I have a huge on-line network for support. There’s DK, for starts. One or two Kossacks kosmail regularly. And a handful of former Kossacks email and/or keep in touch on SM like Twitter or Spoutible. I show up every Thursday in WriteOn!, and even though I’m the least experienced writer in the group by decades, they haven’t thrown me out.

Sometimes it takes more than a visit, though, or a kind word, or an email. Sometimes, the help needed to get by and get through is tangible. The people on our Community Needs List need kind words, but they also need to pay the rent, or take the cat to the vet, or just eat. Those needs can’t be met by a Kosmail alone. If you can, please look over the list and see if there’s someone you can help out today.

I’ve messaged with Christopher Reeves. He’s opened a computer shop in Leavenworth, at 2110 S 4th Street. They do repairs (I asked!). If you live in the area, you can help him while helping yourself.

Kos Katalogue—It’s currently being revised, so if you have changes/additions/corrections, let Cathy M or Bead Lady know.

These community members need a little push to get over a hump. Maybe it’s an unexpected medical bill. Maybe there’s a life situation that has come up and requires resources beyond regular income. Maybe they just got behind and need help getting their footing again. For whatever reason they need help, Wednesdays are the day the Street Prophets diary focuses on those needs. Maybe you’ve skipped over this weekly diary, thinking the little you can give won’t make a difference. But you don’t have to meet a person’s entire need. If we all join together, the small amounts each person can contribute will add up to enough to make a difference in someone’s life. Even $2 or $5 or $10, when added to the mickle that others give, can be all that it takes.

When sending via PayPal, be sure to select “Send to family/friend” to avoid fees on either end. Be aware, both donor and recipient, that GFM not only charges fees to recipients and asks donors to contribute to their organization, but also money received through that platform is treated as taxable income. You will receive a form 1099. If you are requesting help through GFM, also be aware that there can be delays in accessing the money.

If helping financially isn’t the right choice for you at this time, you can still help. Tip and rec the diary so it stays visible. Share on social media: Twitter, Facebook, whatever platform you use, to bring the attention of others outside our daily readers. And offer words of encouragement to people who are struggling. It can be scary to be struggling, and it can feel lonely. This can happen to any of us. Today it isn’t me in need. If it isn’t you, either, please see what you can do to help.
