AUTHOR-GPT: A novel in 15 minutes. [1]

In an author group, a member commented that “by 2050” books and screenplays written by AI apps will be commonplace. Well, I’ve got news about that: it’s already here.

Author-GPT enables its users to generate an entire novel automatically. Yes, including world-building. Yes, including realistic characters and dialogue. It even generates an appropriate book cover, all you need do is add the font work.

The process involves downloading and installing Python, Anaconda, and Jupyter and their dependencies, then you simply run the scripts, and out pops your book. If you don’t need the hassle of all that, you can run the scripts in Google’s COLAB cloud system. You need an API key from OpenAI and another from Stability AI (these authorise the creation of text and images, respectively).

I haven’t made a book myself, yet. But I intend to. My purpose:

As a professional book editor, I want to know if a novel written by AI can be edited by someone like me, to make a book that cannot be identified as having been written by AI. I edit at a rate of around 3,500 words/hour, implying that the total time to make such a novel would be:

15 minutes to generate 80K words plus 23 hours editing time.

In other words, assuming I edit 4 hours daily, I could produce a complete novel in a week.

I believe that anyone who underestimates the potential of AI tools to seriously — VERY seriously — impact the book, screenwriting, and advertising industries, is fooling themself.
