We may finally be witnessing the first glimmers of accountability for Paxton. This being Texas, we won’t bet on it. Paxton is still a high-profile, Trump-anointed Republican in a Republican-controlled state. But who among us, observing the charmed life led by this scoundrel masquerading as the state’s top law enforcement officer, would have thought we’d get even as close to justice as one House committee did this week?

Wednesday, intrigue gave way to damning allegations of corruption and lawbreaking as a panel of veteran prosecutors testified to the results of a previously secret, Republican-led investigation into Paxton’s scandalous tenure in the attorney general's office.

In another shocking development Thursday, the House committee voted unanimously to take the exceedingly rare step of recommending the full House impeach Paxton. Support for such an action isn't clear but, with only a few days of the legislative session left, the House could take up the matter on Friday and if approved, the Senate could hold a trial to determine whether Paxton should be removed.

Paxton denounced Thursday's impeachment recommendation as the act of a "corrupt political establishment" and an "illegitimate attempt to overthrow the will of the people and disenfranchise the voters of our state." He should know a little something about the latter, having filed a baseless lawsuit to throw out millions of lawfully cast ballots in four battleground states in a futile attempt to help Donald Trump overturn the 2020 presidential election.
