Normally, discussions between the Executive and Legislative branches about serious matters are held in private while a compromise is worked out. However, the Speaker has chosen to make the subjects of past debts and future deficits a matter for public discussion and I am more than willing to challenge him about his responsibilities to the American people, all of them, not just the few.
While I campaigned and was elected on a platform that included my willingness to work with both parties to get things done for the American people, it has become increasingly apparent that the Speaker’s Party does not always share that common desire and interest.
This power play by the Speaker ought to be of grave concern to every American as it is nothing more than a blatant attempt to reduce critical support to the middle class, the poor, and indirectly, our veterans. Why would anyone jeopardize the future of the United States by refusing to pay our bills? As I have said many times, let’s pay our shortly-to-be “past due bills” and then get serious about fixing “future” deficits.
In my opinion, were I to agree to the Speaker’s demands, I would be agreeing that a duly elected President could be subject to giving up his role and responsibilities as President to the whims and threats of the Speaker of the House. That is not what is written in The Constitution and, it SHOULD NOT and WILL NOT happen on my watch!!
So today, I am once again asking the Speaker to govern on behalf of the future of the United States and its people and pass a simple bill to increase the National Debt. Then, we can all return to work doing the job for which we were elected.
In case it is still unclear to some, raising the debt limit is not an extraordinary act, both parties have routinely done so numerous times in the past. The total responsibility for the failure to do so this time lies clearly and completely with the current Speaker of the House.
We are running out of time, the Speaker has to decide who he works for.
