Recently, I was in in the local pizzeria about a block from my job and not too far from home chowing down...well, on something that I probably shouldn’t have been eating. Suddenly I looked up and there was B.
My best friend. We hadn’t spoken with one another in months.
We didn’t stop speaking with one another because of a big argument that the two of us had. Sure, there were idiosyncrasies that he has that would irritate me at times and I'm sure that he felt (and feels) the same way about me. (In fact, some of our idiosyncrasies had become major points of disagreements and arguments but we always got over it after huffing and puffing for a few days.)
No, the months-long separation was basically the result of the two of us not having the same schedule. B. usually wakes up early afternoon and most of our socializing took place in the evenings. I’m usually working both of my part-time jobs in the afternoon into the evening and occasionally into the early morning hours.
We don’t live too far from one another but still…getting together for even a cup of coffee was difficult. So...we just lost touch and went about our lives.
When B. caught in the pizzeria, we spent about an hour together just catching up on the past few months. For example, I’ve known his son all of his life and his son will be going to high school this coming fall. My job duties at both jobs have expanded. Some of B.’s is now displayed at a few local coffeehouses.
We’re both doing well.
But it is so much better to have my friend of over 25 years to share all the goodness with.
Since we met up in the pizzeria, we’ve gone out to dinner once and have talked on the phone quite a bit. We’ll meet up again sometime this weekend, probably Sunday evening.
There’s a saying to the effect that “people are in your life for reasons and seasons.”
I’m glad that the season of my best friend and I not talking and not seeing one another seems to be over, although my instinct is we probably need the space and time for whatever reason.
I don’t have too many people that I call “friend” for a host of reasons so I do cherish the few that I can call “friend.”
Comments below the fold.
