Corpsman kneels stunned in the mud next to a bandaged leg

The Corpsman

The corpsman kneels in the mud

beside a wounded Marine;

his stare *click*

is what I’ve wanted to say

not just about this ambush or about this day,

but about how

it’s the essence of 'war'

and the essence of 'now'.

Now is all there is right now,

kneeling with that stare

by another wounded grunt beside him there

in someone else’s mud;

now the future

is only what comes next

and nothing more,

and now you want nothing more than

surviving what comes next.

Remember now,

now will be the past one day,

God-willing so long past and so far away

it can only be reached in memories

and flashbacks

and nightmares

and though it will never cut you again,

it'll always seem that it can.
