It's just about the season
May Day, the day I used to take May baskets around to some of our senior neighbors in my old Kansas neighborhood with flowers from our flower beds nestled inside, along with some chocolates and other treats. I doubt that’s being done in too many places these days — if for no other reason than concern that kids may be greeted by the wrong end of a gun. Then again, is there ever a right end of a gun? I can’t agree that there is one. Either end can cause horrific damage, either to ones self or to others.
I can’t do the flower thing just yet. My daffodils, the first flowers to appear in my yard, are only 2-3 inches tall, at best, and they’re aways from blooming. I have some leaves that will eventually be recognizable upon Columbine flower stalks, and some leaves have even made an appearance on what I believe to be raspberry twigs, but I didn’t see any fruit last year so maybe I’m just wrong on them.
OTOH, this little darling had pictures taken through the window screen of my neighbor’s house. Mom had chosen their house as a safe place and we observed this fawn for a few weeks as it grew up, went through the stages of life, worried about when it seemed Mom might have abandoned it since she left and wasn’t seen for more than a day, but Mama eventually came back and the family was reunited with far less drama for them than what we humans experienced over the occasion.
I am relieved at the beauty that is outside, now that the temperature is projected to be above freezing for at least this week. The snow is finally melting, clouds come along in the afternoon, drop some rain in patches, and position themselves for beautiful sunsets just the way they should, and the sunbeams slant just right to produce golden rays from the sun in the late afternoon. Spring is finally here in the Rockies, and I can forget about the cares and concerns of the world while looking outside at beautiful Colorado.
My flower garden in Denver.
I hope you are all enjoying the warming weather and you haven’t invested too heavily in the Avalanche winning another Stanley Cup or the Rockies going to the World Series again. I hope you haven’t been victims of the free distribution of bullets that seems to be a constant condition down in the Denver metro and that you’re enjoying a beautiful, calm May Day of your own. Perhaps you have flower gardens or even blooming fruit trees.
The hummingbirds have started returning. I have to be careful to not put out so many feeders that I would attract bears, so I limit myself to one.
One more time — I’m still hoping to have one or more volunteers to take over writing this Open Thread for each Monday in August while I’m back over in Thailand. Please let me know if you would like to have some fun with this. I would hate to have just generic content or to have to write from Thailand on my phone.
Until such time as this beautiful season is over with, the floor and this Open Thread are yours. What’s on your mind this evening/Tuesday morning?
