Thanks to #MeToo women denouncing the behavior of despicable men, our laggard society has once again been brought up to speed. Simply stated, sex without consent is rape.

Yet the moment is long overdue to reckon with another violation, not as salacious but just as vicious. The mind-rape that occurs when lies are knowingly and maliciously propagated. On a personal level this toxic behavior is called gaslighting and is well-known to shatter lives. When perpetrated on a national scale it swells to disinformation capable of fracturing the commonwealth.

Well-paid proselytizers of disinformation only increase their stridentness when confronted with factual evidence. Callously, like prostitutes infected with pox, they infect the vulnerable and turn them into carriers of the disease who have inflicted iupon us a non-consensual reality wherein truth and lies now fight for dominance. Dr. Bandy Lee, the eminent forensic psychiatrist, has labeled this condition Trump Contagion . She urges us to come to terms with the spread of this contagion not as a political movement or philosophy but as a mental pathology.

Did you consent to have Fox News included as part of your television package? Do you have friends who are now immune to fact checks and speak in voices no longer their own but that of the disease. Do you have family members who have morphed unrecognizably and become carriers of contagion?

Clearly an intervention is necessary. We can’t wait until a fascist putsch occurs before we get tough. Europeans who have lived first hand through this kind of pathology during WW2 are not naive enough to allow incendiary speech to go unpunished. We must follow their example, for if we don’t every passing day brings us closer to mass psychosis.
