In a mirror of the January 6th coup attempt, the attack on the Brazilian capital was orchestrated and financed by people close to the losing Presidential candidate, Jair Bolsonaro. The security forces of the pro-Bolsonaro Governor of the Federal District containing the nation’s capital Brasília aided and abetted the insurrectionists.

Newly elected President Lula was quick to act, suspending Governor Ibaneis Rocha and taking command of the capital's security. Two days later the Supreme Court ordered the arrest of Brasília’s public security chief, former Bolsonaro justice minister Anderson Torres. The government is wasting no time in arresting the rioters and going after the financiers of the coup.

x Problems grow for billionaire Bolsonaro sycophant Luciano Hang. Yesterday his bank account was frozen under suspicion he's trying to finance an auto-coup. Today a S. Paulo court ruled him guilty of slander for falsely calling homeless advocate Father Julio Lancelotti a thief. pic.twitter.com/Aj4rc2F8Ms — BrianMier (@BrianMteleSUR) August 24, 2022

There have been arrests of the insurrectionists and the camps they set up at military bases have been dismantled and many arrested.

x Brazil 🇧🇷

The Army gave 1 hour for the demonstrators to dismantle the camp and get on the buses provided by the government. They were then taken to the police station.

Translation of the above tweet: This is the face of the Bolsonarist terrorist who tried to blow up a bomb in Brasilia 1 week after Lula's inauguration. George Washington Oliveira Sousa is 54 years old, is from Pará and is a supporter of Bolsonaro. This was the armory found in the house where he was hiding.

Federal troops have replaced the local security forces in the Capital as the Government detected a new coup call for this Wednesday. Four days after the coup attempt with the seizure of the headquarters of the three powers, protesters called to gather again at 6:00 p.m. in Brasilia.

Argentine newspaper Pagina12 is reporting that ex-President Jair Bolsonaro’s accounts have also been frozen. It is reported that Bolsonaro may extend his stay in the USA or go to Italy and apply for Italian citizenship to avoid prosecution in Brazil. Italian deputy Angelo Bonelli, from the Green Party, told the Italian lower house that the government of his country should not grant citizenship to someone who "attacks democracy".

Perhaps taking a cue from US citizen's online campaign to identify Jan 6th insurrectionists, Brazilians are taking to social media en mass to do the same:

High-profile digital influencers have joined pro-democracy politicians and Brazil’s law enforcement agencies in an attempt to identify insurrectionists who took part in Sunday’s attack on the Brazilian government. ...The justice ministry, federal police and state prosecutors all set up email accounts where members of the public can send tips and by Tuesday morning they had received more than 30,000 emails, an official said.

x During the call, Pres. Biden affirmed Lula's recent electoral victory as president and voiced "unwavering support" for Brazil’s democracy and for the free will of the Brazilian people. Lula also accepted an invitation to visit Washington early next month. https://t.co/MZpCeoJ3Gr — NBC News (@NBCNews) January 10, 2023

It’s gratifying to see the forces of fascism and the ‘South American Trump” failing and Democracy being successfully defended. A day after Brazil’s capital was stormed, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva worked from his office, where he met with all 27 of the country’s governors as well as the heads of congress and the Supreme Court.
