He's just a little pup!! All 97lbs of him!

As I promised two weeks ago, I will not be staying up late tonight to play in the comments because I have to get up at 4:30am tomorrow to get breakfast and coffee before heading to my polling place to spend Election Day as a precinct warden. And while I’ve got the adrenaline thrill that always hits me as I contemplate helping to make democracy happen, I’m also battling Fall Behind, and my body has no idea what time it is.

This past weekend was full of exciting things here at Casa Brillig. Our eldest K1 and their best friend are now housemates, and on Saturday we got to see the place for the first time. It was Build The Ikea Bedroom Weekend, and after the grand tour (it’s absolutely the nicest First Apartment I’ve ever been in, hands down) we got her bed built on Saturday. Sunday was reserved for building the dresser and tv stand, and as longtime IKEA builders, it went smoothly.

We also had exciting K2 events, as his high school soccer team began their postseason playoff run on Sunday. I didn’t get to see that match but as they won handily, I’ll be at Wednesday’s Round of 16 game. Mr. Brillig was our Soccer Parent this weekend, while I was Furniture Lead.

But what happened Sunday morning threw a terrifying wrench into our day. K2 took his vitamins and a pre-playoff proactive dose of naproxen (aka Aleve) into our living room so he could take them with breakfast while watching Premier League. A while later, we retrieved the empty silicone cupcake liner that had held his vitamins from the dog’s mouth. “Oh good, K2 got his vitamins!” we said. Then a few minutes later K2 walked into the kitchen. “Hey, I need my vitamins”.

Well, f------------ck.

Mr. Brillig had to get K2 to the field for playoffs, so I called Animal Poison Control and spent ten minutes on hold. I hung up and called our local Vet Hospital, the one I last visited when Vorpal needed help getting to the Bridge. I said Simba had swallowed two 220mg Aleve and this vet hospital that generally diverts all but end-of-life cases and serious trauma said “Bring him in”.

I can assert confidently my heart is strong based on how it help up in the next half hour as I got the dog in the car and drove over.

To make a long story short, I had to call Poison Control again because the hospital needed a case number to proceed, but I finally got through while Simba serenaded the ENTIRE facility with his barking, and they took him back to get him to throw up. A terrifying half hour later, they called me into a room and said that thankfully, my little pup’s 44kg mass (that’s 97lbs!) meant he was juuuuuust at the toxic dose where kidney failure is a concern, but he also might develop stomach ulcers. You see, NSAIDS that work well in humans are generally VERY toxic to cats and dogs, and we were at a near-dangerous dose with my 100lb dog swallowing TWO naproxen. TWO.

We were lucky. Had K2 not mentioned missing his morning meds, we never would have known Simba ate them. Simba’s a big boy and as long as his his kidney numbers stay normal and his stomach is OK, he’ll be released from the vet hospital tomorrow. We have pet insurance, that we’re hoping covers most of this (but if not, he’s family and we regret NOTHING about his treatment). The vets all say he is a loveable, happy boy under light sedation because he loves to sing to the entire hospital with his deep Pyrenees-Pittie voice.

So. Be extraordinarily careful about your Tylenol, Advil and Aleve. Be that person crawling around to find the one you dropped. The pootie or pup you save thanks you. Please feel free to share other items dangerous to our fur friends in the comments, so we all can learn!

My other PSA… if you haven’t yet voted by mail or via early voting, GET THEE TO A POLLING CENTER TOMORROW. All of us awake at Pollworker O’Clock to prepare for your arrival can’t wait to see you!
