This Houston high school teacher needs some pretty basic supplies — can’t do algebra without graphing; can’t graph without pencils and graph paper; can’t squeeze that kind of money out of a teacher’s pocket, and certainly not out of the students’. Also, I confess I’m pretty stoked to see a non-binary teacher in Houston (or anywhere), and I want to be sure they have what they need. I bet you will too.
This project currently enjoys 2x matching funds from Chevron: Chevron recognizes that supporting racial equity in education is essential. In partnership with DonorsChoose, Chevron seeks to provide students with resources that increase access to STEM opportunities for Black, Latinx, and Indigenous Americans.
PROJECT #1 Project: Graphing Materials for Title I Mathematicians Resources: Help me give my students graphing materials so they have essential tools to use throughout the school year. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Elsik High School, Houston, Texas Total: $262.61 (2x matching funds from Chevron) Still Needed: $ 262.61 $172.61 ($87 from us) Teacher’s Comments from Mx. Joya: My Project: My school is in the International District of Houston. My students come from so many different backgrounds and there are so many languages spoken throughout my classes, especially since I also teach English Language Learners. As a Title I School the overwhelming majority of our students are economically disadvantaged. Many of the students have jobs outside of school in order to help their families financially. I don’t want my students to worry about purchasing materials for my classroom. I want them to focus on what is important in my class: being students and being successful in math. The materials I am requesting will help us do graphing assignments and projects throughout the school year. Graphing is a big part of Algebra and is covered in nearly every chapter. Your assistance in getting these materials will help my students by allowing them to not worry about buying graphing materials. They will be able to focus on learning. Here’s our long-term project, introduced last week by nomandates. Almost half of the requested funds will purchase safety goggles for a never-before-funded science classroom that doesn’t have any [aaagh!, says nomandates, and we must agree!], and the remaining funds will purchase things like earth science books and a cross-sectional earth model.
PROJECT #2 Project: Just a Few Scientists, with No Resources...Safety First?...Oh Boy Resources: Help me give my students the necessary safety equipment and resources needed in a lab, to increase student productivity and generate higher-order thinking daily in the classroom. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Mundy’s Mill Middle School, Jonesboro, Georgia Total: $412.12 Still Needed: $ 378.59 $313.59 Project description by Ms. Monday: With year one almost coming to an end and next year on the horizon. I would like to provide my students with the most accelerated, STEAM-focused, mind-stimulating version of my earth science curriculum. I have realized within my first year of teaching, I lack tons of necessary safety materials and resources. How can we conduct labs? With NO safety goggles! Some requested materials and resources are basic and others a related to earth science. The purpose of this project will give me the resources needed to provide daily stimulating instruction and meet the needs of all my Kinesthetic, Visual, and Auditory learners. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! When Ms. Monday’s students see their new cross-sectional earth model, they’ll start learning some fascinating things about our planet! x x YouTube Video (But wait!) x x YouTube Video
Last week, two of our projects were completed, including one that was in imminent danger of expiring — many thanks to our readers! Project #1, Kamishibai Story telling: Ms. Walker wanted her Georgia middle school students to use the Japanese story-telling tradition kamishibai to dramatize the book The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. She writes: Thank you all for the donations of supplies for my science classroom. I am certain my students will be excited to read their books and learn how to demonstrate their knowledge using the ancient art of storytelling called Kamishibai. By combining literature and science, students will not only improve their reading comprehension, but also their content knowledge. In addition, there will be an artistic component in which they will draw their characters onto a large poster board, cut out a circle for their own faces and read their script on the back of their poster. I can't wait to upload the pictures. Lastly, without your help this project would not have been possible. Project #2, Tech Savvy in Pre-K Land: Ms. Searles’s Houston preschool students needed help with reading and writing, and she found a product that combines journals/workbooks with a mobile app that brings animated animal friends into the lessons. She writes: Lions, and tigers and bears, oh my!!
What a learning environment, engagement so high!! Thank you from our new learning jungle in Pre K land. The thrill of excitement as we work in our classroom with these tech savvy materials. This experience and interaction with animals in their habitats has opened up eyes and ears for my young learners.
Thank you for all your support!
DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education.
Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project combats the anti-science, anti-education push in conservative America by funding science, math, and literacy projects in red-state public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau.
Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required!
Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 987! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.
