Bugs and errors:
Q: Starting setup.exe from DOS results in a crash !
What should I do ?
A: Please start setup.exe from Windows, e.g. using the file manager.
Q: After I start Amadeus the first time a module called WinG does some speed
testing.
During this test Windows crashes completely. The only thing I can do is
to reset !
A: Yes, WinG is the new highspeed graphics interface from Microsoft.
Unfortunately it does not work with an older flat-memory SVGA driver for S3
cards. Most likley your windows configuration is using such a driver.
Upgrade to the new driver version available from ftp.cica.indiana.edu or
one of its mirrors (pub/win3/drivers/video/s3-24b8.zip).
Q: When I start Amadeus I always get the error:
* GROWSTUB caused a General Protection Fault.
A: You are using the buggy microsoft mouse driver 9.00. To remove this message
you can either upgrade to a bug fix of this driver (at ftp.microsoft.com)
or you can remove 'pointer.dll' in win.ini in section '[windows]', line
'load='.
Q: I've just tried to start Amadeus on my workstation, and have encountered a
serious problem. Immediately after the program is loaded, right after
displaying W.A.M.'s picture, it produces an error message saying
"Could not connect to Hyper-G database", and then another
error message saying that the program will be aborted ("Error:1") and ...
that's it! I'm back to Windows!
A: Amadeus has problem to connect to the Hyper-G server due to one of the
following reasons:
1.) the internet connection to the server does not work - try to ping
the server specified in the amadeus.ini file or at the command line
e.g. ping hyperg.tu-graz.ac.at
2.) If 1.) does work then the server might be down currently - try a
bit later.
3.) If 1.) and 2.) does not help then you might 'sit behind an internet
firewall'.
For you sys-admin: You have to have free access to port number 418
(the Hyper-G port number) and ALL ports > 1024 (are dynamically
assigned by the document cache server - but this may change in future
version of the Hyper-G server)
Q: I can navigate around the directories, but when I try to view a file, I get
the message:'could not load style file', and get dumped out with a fatal
error message - every time.
A: This is very typical for not specifying the correct working directory in the
properties dialog box, it has to be the same, as the directory, where the
Amadeus.ini file resides.
E.g Dialog Box
+----------'Program Item Properties'----------+
| Command Line: D:\AMADEUS\amadeus.exe |
| Working Directory: D:\AMADEUS |
.....
Hint: If you use the setup program to install Amadeus, this problem should
not occur.
Q: I always get the error
'*** Error:: Document Cache error: Cannot open file ***', when I want to
access a multimedia document (images, sounds, movies, ...)
What's wrong ?
A: You didn't specify your pc's hostname in your local tcp/ip hosts file,
or your pc is not known to any domain name server, or you 'sit behind
a firewall'. (Ask your sys-admin)
In the last case (firewall) you have to make sure that you can use port
number 418 (Hyper-G port) and ALL port number >1024 (are dynamically
assigned by the document cache server - but this may change in future
version of Hyper-G).
Q: Amadeus crashes when I want to access a multi-media document.
Is there a work-around for this ?
A: Most likely you are using PC/TCP version less than 2.30 (e.g. 2.20)
This version does not fully support the winsock library Amadeus is
based on. Upgrade to a newer version (e.g. 2.31 or 3.00)
But be careful ! Be sure to delete ALL files of the previous version
(especially if some are located in the 'windows' or 'windows\system'
directory).
The best thing you can do is to erase the complete old pctcp directory but
backup your ini (e.g. pctcp.ini) and hosts (if any) file before !
Then restore your ini files back to an emtpy pctcp directory and install
the new PC/TCP version over this configuration files. If you do that you
don't need to remember all your settings because the PC/TCP install program
will read it from your ini files !
Q: After installing your Amadeus client I could not use NCSA Mosaic 2 alpha 7.
Mosaic was giving me Win32s Error. The only remedy was to delete the
following dll's: bwcc, ctl3dv2 and ctl3d32.
A: NCSA Mosaic 2 alpha 7 does not work correctly with Win32s 1.15a (although
NCSA claims that it does). - especially in conjunction with ctl3d32.dll.
Amadeus versions >0.82.000 include the new Win32s 1.2. With that version
this problem should no longer occur !
Questions concerning usage:
Q: I have installed a copy of Amadeus but seem only to be able to contact the
server in Austria. How do I configure it to contact the Auckland
university server?
A: There are two ways:
You can either specify your default server on the command line
(via File/Properties in the Program Manager):
e.g.: ..<path>..\amadeus.exe -r www.hmu.auckland.ac.nz
or you can specify it in the amadeus.ini file (located in your amadeus
directory): e.g.:
[Amadeus]
Server=www.hmu.auckland.ac.nz
that's all.
Hint: copy the Amadeus icon on the Program Manager desktop for several
times each with different properties settings specifying different home
servers.
Ah, yes and there's another way to change your home server during a session:
With the Navigation/Goto command in Amadeus like that:
Goto-dialog box: hyperg://www.hmu.auckland.ac.nz
But attention, if you change to a server like this, the Amadeus history will
be erased, so you can't navigate back to previous collection etc.. This
limitation will fall in future versions of Amadeus.
Note: this is not the same as following a link to a new server or over the
hyperroot, because in the case mentioned above you change your HOME-server
(=where you have to identify etc.)
General questions:
Q: Are there some mirror sites for Amadeus ?
A: Yes:
Austria
ftp://ftp.tu-graz.ac.at/pub/Hyper-G
Germany
ftp://elib.zib-berlin.de/pub/InfoSystems/Hyper-G
ftp://ftp.ask.uni-karlsruhe.de/pub/infosystems/Hyper-G
Italy
ftp://ftp.esrin.esa.it/pub/Hyper-G
Sweden
ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Networked.Information.Retrieval/Hyper-G
New Zealand
ftp://ftp.cs.auckland.ac.nz/pub/HMU/Hyper-G
USA
ftp://ftp.utdallas.edu/pub/Hyper-G
Q: Can Amadeus be used to work offline ?
A: Not in this version, but we are working on a local database, that allows
you not only to store some text documents, but full Hyper-G features
including hierarchy (collections, cluster) and even search capabilities
(full text, attributes, ...)
This should enable an information provider to ship an offline database on
cd-rom with Amadeus and Harmony (UNIX) as Hyper-Media-Database viewers.
But of course this can also be used to store a local homepage/
homecollection with entrypoints/links to different databases or
collections. (E.g. If somebody has no real homecollection on a Hyper-G
server, or has no Hyper-G server connection at all.)
Q: Does Amadeus support the CERN httpd proxy server?
A: Hyper-G itself supported such a proxy like feature right from the beginning:
Typically you connect to the nearest Hyper-G server (=becomes your home
server).
If you want to fetch a document from a different server, not the client,
but the (home-)server does this for you, cashes it and forwards it to the
client.
If you mean the WWW protocol that Amadeus is also capable of, the answer is
no, at this time. But it will be supported in one of the next releases.
