Hi, I am Mas Yblam (not a real name) and I love PES.
This is my first FAQ so feel free to send any guide building
tips and suggestions.
PES 2008 WII was first released on the 21st of february 2008,
in Japan and has revolutionized the way football is
played on a game console. Hopefully this guide will help you grasp
the basic controls and teach you some more advanced stuff.
For any extra information or questions please E-mail me.
My address is

==========================================================================
[1.2] Introduction to PES, basic stuff
==========================================================================
Pro Evolution Soccer is a football video game series
developed by Konami (KCET).
It is very popular in Europe. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 is an association
football video game in the Pro Evolution Soccer series by Konami.
The game was officially announced on 18 June 2007.
This version of PES 2008 differs radically from the other versions,
and it was made by a different team in Konami to fully concentrate
on taking advantage of the unique features of the Wii Remote.
The basic gameplay is centered around pointing the Wii Remote at the
screen and directing players by dragging them with the on-screen cursor,
and passing is done by simply pointing to the desired space or player
and pressing a button.
This allows for a more tactical approach to the game, as there is
almost complete freedom in moving any player on the screen anywhere,
and many more tactics and manoeuvres can be used in than ever before.
This section is just an introduction
to those who have never played a football
game or watched one or TV.
The game football is very simple to understand.
There are four basic positions:
Goalkeeper – attempts to block shots on goal. The only player allowed
touching the ball with his hands but only
if he is in his own penalty area.
Defender – attempts to stop the opposing player
from attacking and scoring by tackling them.
Midfielder – assists the defence and the attack
Attack – shoots at the opponents goal and stays up the field.
And here are some very basic rules:
1) No hands (except the goalkeeper inside his penalty are).
2) No fouling. A foul outside results in a free kick,
inside it’s a penalty.
3) A bad foul results in a yellow card, a really bad one a red card.
Two yellow cards also make a red.
A red card means the player will be sent off
for the remainder of the match.
4) When the ball goes out, it’s either a throw in (out at the sides)
a corner kick or a goal kick (out at the end).
5) Offside is when a player is closer to the goal than the second
last of his opponents (goalkeeper included).
There you go. These are the basics you need to know about football.
After a few matches these should make sense if you don’t really
know anything about football.

[2] Gameplay Hints
==========================================================================
[2.1] How to play/controls
==========================================================================
NOTE: These are basic controls.
For tips on the more advanced ones see the in game tutorial,
or check out the first-touch control guide on gamefaqs.
Attacking and defending controls:
Movement: Nunchuk Stick or Press (A) somewhere on the pitch so the
player goes to that position.
If you press (A) and hold it down then the player will go where you point,
in doing so you can control the movement of the player much better.
The player only sprints when you use the (A) button.
Attacking controls:
Swing Nunchuk: Shoots.
(B): Pass/cross (pass in the air)
Aiming directly at a player will pass to that player.
Aiming in a clear space will make the nearest player to run for the ball.
A through ball is when the ball is played in front of a player.
Swing the Nunchuk before the player receives the ball to
perform a header when a cross is played in.
Off the ball controls:
Any players who are not in possession of the ball can be moved in
exactly the same way as you move the player with the ball.
By doing this you can make decoy runs limiting the amount of players
on the way to goal or pass to that player if he is not followed.
Defensive controls:
Swing Nunchuk: Clear ball
Aim at opponent player with the ball and press(A):
A defender will put pressure on the attacker.
Up to two defenders can put pressure on the attacker at one time.
Players putting on pressure will show a blue circle around their feet.
When the blue circle turns red the player the defending player will
attempt to steal the ball from his opponent.
At any time by pressing (Z) and swinging the Nunchuk the defender
applying pressure will perform a slide tackle
Press on an opponent player who hasn’t got the ball to man-mark him.
When a player is man-marked press (Z) to move in front of the
opponent player, in doing so you can attempt to intercept a pass.
Use sliding tackles to intercept passes.
Be careful as if you catch a player you could be carded!
Call a second defender only if you can afford to
(when the second player isn't marking anyone else).
Also try to avoid tackling unnecessarily from behind,
especially slide tackles.
==========================================================================
[2.2] General tips
==========================================================================
General tips for all difficulty levels
==========================================================================
- Pass. Pass often but don't be sloppy.
Choose who to pass to and direct your pass.
Take care but also don't take all day about it.
- Cross often. It's the best way to get balls into the box.
This is when your side midfielders (wingers) run down the sides of
the pitch and cross it into the box for a striker to score a header
or a volley. Use (B) to cross.
- Use through balls if you have fats strikers so you can run towards goal
and hopefully have a 1-on-1 with the keeper.
- Use first touch control (see section [2.5]) but use it correctly!
- Use off the ball control (also section [2.5]) it can be the difference
between victory and defeat
- Counter attack. If you have successfully defended a corner or attack
in great numbers play the ball quickly up field to minimise the
resistance made by the opposition and catch the defence off-guard.
- Fake shot, pressing and holding (Z) when you shoot will fake a shot.
- Swing Nunchuk in defence = clear. If you are under a lot of pressure
in your own half this can save you from a goal.
==========================================================================
Difficulty specific tips
==========================================================================
BEGINNER:
Almost pointless, this level is for one match only so you can
learn how to play and still win your first match.
Can be fun for better players though,
not often do England beat Brazil 22-0
AMATEUR:
Just pass the ball quite alot and hammer in crosses.
The com isn't hard to beat on this level so there's no real need for
fancy stuff. Maybe a few matches at this level and you're up to semi-pro.
REGULAR:
Take more care whilst passing and direct them better.
Start using through balls but beware: don't make the mistake that using
a through ball is always the best option, use normal passes as well.
Don't wait until you get inside the box to shoot all the time,
as you might be tackled.As long as you don't lose possession often and
keep a tight defense then you'll be fine. Also start using first touch
control if you haven't already, but again don't use it all of the time.
PROFESSIONAL:
Eek. This is tough but certainly not impossible.
The CPU gives you little time to pass inside their half
so always look out for options.
Again using first touch control correctly, passing quickly but neatly
and taking advantage of every chance you have will help you win.
Nonetheless this takes real skill.
TOP PLAYER:
Hard. The CPU can close you down in seconds and can turn a goal-line
clearance into a goal in seconds. Use every skill that you have learned
and always think a step ahead of your opponent.
==========================================================================
[2.3] Set pieces
==========================================================================
Corners
==========================================================================
There are a different types of corners. Use the practise mode to
experiment and try short long, 1st post, 2nd post, etc.
But remember the harder the level the harder it is to get your player
on the end of the cross.
==========================================================================
Direct free-kicks
==========================================================================
These are initiated when you are close to goal.
To take a free kick swing the Nunchuk, the strength of the shot will
depend on the strength of the swing, too hard and it goes well over.
Take free kicks on the training menu to practise. Remember some angles
are almost impossible to score from in this case try and cross.
==========================================================================
Indirect free-kicks
==========================================================================
These are initiated when you are far away from the goal.
In these cases a pass must be made.
==========================================================================
Penalties
==========================================================================
Yes, 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper. Aim at the screen in any direction.
The cursor represents the target. Swing the Nunchuk to shoot.
Press the (Z) button and swing the Nunchuk to do a lift shot.
To attempt to save a penalty simply hold down the directional buttons on
the Wii Remote in the direction you want to dive and swing the Wii remote
as the player shoots.
==========================================================================
Throw ins
==========================================================================
Off the ball throw ins! You can select and move players as you normally
would. Use (B) to throw.
==========================================================================
[2.4] Formations/line-ups
==========================================================================
There are loads of formations to choose from. Here are the main ones
along with a brief description:
4-4-2: Most common formation.
A balanced team with no real emphasis on attack or defence
4-3-3: With 3 strikers this is definitely one of the best
attacking options. Watch out though because the smaller midfield
won't provide as much defensive cover.
3-4-3: Again an attack minded team but pay caution to the fact that you
have only 3 defenders!
4-5-1: This formation will only give you very little attacking power,
but in defence there shouldn’t be a problem.
A formation suited to counter attacks.
5-4-1: Same really as above. You'll need a good striker and
fit midfielders to score. A formation suited to counter attacks.
5-3-2: Not quite as defensive as you have wingbacks who are players that
can support the midfield.
This is actually quite a useful formation.
5-2-3: 5 defenders seems very defensive but again they are wingbacks.
The major fault is that you only have 2 midfielders so fit
wingbacks are needed.
3-6-1: Great attacking formations as long as your midfielders support
the lone striker.
3-5-2: A formation that allows a lot of possession ion midfield,
with various attacking options but a weaker defence.
Once you have chosen the line-up you want you can manually move players
around the pitch to set a more defensive or attacking stance,
and allow wing play to be easier.For line-ups pick the most
suited player for the position. It will say Next to the name of the
player where he likes to play. The brighter yellow area's of the pitch
indicate where the player will play best.
==========================================================================
[2.5] Off the ball/first touch control
==========================================================================
Off the ball control
==========================================================================
Make runs, for decoy or to set up a passing option by grabbing the player
with (A) and moving him like a player in possession.
==========================================================================
First touch control
==========================================================================
When the ball is coming towards you press (B) somewhere on the pitch so
that the player about to receive the ball passes there on their first
touch (sometimes a second touch is needed).
==========================================================================
[3] Game Modes
==========================================================================
[3.1] Champions Road
==========================================================================
The Wii version of PES 2008 omits the Master League mode for the
Champions Road, which lets the player tour different leagues around
Europe, and when a game is won, it is possible to acquire players
from the defeated team. Players can gain experience in the Champions
Road by playing matches. In the Champions Road, it is possible to
select what abilities the players acquire when they gain enough
experience to level-up.
==========================================================================
Beginning Champions Road
==========================================================================
Once you have picked your difficulty settings you must pick your team.
You can choose between original team names, from world city names or
select club teams.
But no matter what team you choose (even a real club) you start off
with 16 1 star players:
-2 Goalkeepers
-4 Defenders
-7 Midfielders
-4 Attackers
==========================================================================
Practice League
==========================================================================
At first the only league you can compete in is the Practice League:
it consists of 4 teams including your own. You play each team once and
the team with the highest amount of points wins.
==========================================================================
Special Training
==========================================================================
Before some matches you will have to participate in Special Training:
This will give you tips on how to play. Once you have finished Special
Training you will be given missions to complete during matches.
These missions vary greatly: from “score a hat-trick” to
“have +60 % possession” to “catch opposition offside”.
Even if you do not complete the special training missions will still
be added if there are any.
==========================================================================
Playing the match
==========================================================================
You can choose to play a match (with options selected before)
just the same as any other game.
Note that there is no extra time or penalties if you draw a league match.
==========================================================================
After Matches
==========================================================================
After each match you will be notified of any missions you may
have completed. It will also give you important information
you need to know.
For example: “You can now acquire 2* players”.
==========================================================================
Skills
==========================================================================
Next all of your players who played in the match will see their stats
bars upgraded either partially or fully. Once a bar is full you can add
Skills to a player.
Skills are divided into basic ability and special skills.
Some times there is also an Advanced Skills.
All Skills need more than one stat bar to be filled some will only need
a few some will need a lot. But always think about what position the
players plays in and what could be useful for that position.
==========================================================================
Acquiring Players
==========================================================================
After adding Skills to all the players you can and want to,
it is time to acquire players.
You acquire players from the team you have just played against.
You cannot see the players only cards that represent players.
As you scroll over these cards, you will be given information on
the players the card contains. The amount of players you can acquire
depends on the result of the match. At first you can only acquire 1 to 2
players but eventually you are able to acquire 3 players. You can only
acquire players with a star ranking up to a certain amount.
To be able to acquire better players you must complete missions.
Once you have acquired all the players you can either place them in
your Team line-up or in your “Not-Used”.Once you have more players than
spaces on the team roster, any player left in the square(s) on the left
shall be let go.
