(Warning: As I'm a Gundam fan since First Gundam (I
first watched First Gundam about one year after it was first
aired in Japan), I use the old and possibly political
incorrect spelling of "Zion" (pronounced as "jee-orn"),
instead of the current "Zeon". Sieg Zion!)

2.1  2ND IMPRESSION

    From Chris Guilfoyle (2002.10.04):
Here's a trick of my own, I'm not sure if you've heard
it before, I got it from watching Gundam 0083.
The best way to get to an area on the map quickly is
to jump in that direction, cut the boost while still
holding the directional button, wait until you hit the
ground, then jump again. That way, while you're descending,
your boost is recharging, so you can keep doing that for
much longer than you could if you just boosted along the
ground normally.
Try it and see what you think.

    [Ramble ON]

On 2002.10.02-2002.10.09, in the Gundam Senki message
board in GameFAQs.com, I ran a "Favourite new heroine in
Gundam Senki" popularity poll. The rules of the poll were
simple.
Each voter had two votes and could choose two heroines.
The candidates/heroines were limited to only the new
heroines in the game, namely:
    I.   Yuuki (Zion)
    II.  May (Zion)
    III. Jane (Zion)
    IV.  Kerguelenko (Zion)
    V.   Noel (Federation)
    VI.  Annie (Federation)
    VII. Rachel (Federation)
If a voter placed both votes on the same heroine, only
one vote was counted. If a voter placed more than two votes,
the first two votes were counted. Votes placed on "old"
heroines in the game, such as Aina and Christina, were
ignored. Flames were also ignored.

In the end, 9 valid votes from 5 voters are counted.
The winner is... E.F.S.F. Corporal Noel Anderson!
v(^o^)

    The poll results are:
    1.   Noel (Federation)        4 (44%)
    2.   May (Zion)               3 (33%)
    3.   Rachel (Federation)      1 (11%)
         Yuuki (Zion)             1 (11%)
    5.   Jane (Zion)              0 (0%)
         Kerguelenko (Zion)       0 (0%)
         Annie (Federation)       0 (0%)

4.   HIDDEN COMMANDS

    *SPOILER ALERT*

  - Demo movie:

After the game is loaded, press L2 or R2 to play the
demo movie.

  - Change MS colour:

In the MS select screen, choose a MS, then press (hold
L2)+(hold R2)+X. But in the hangar, the MS colour
temporarily looks the same.
This command functions in the Mission, VS, and Extra
Modes.
When the chosen MS is the Zaku II Kai, the design of
the MS changes.
In a VS Mode battle, the pilot may also change.

  - Critical hit:

Lock-on an enemy MS, then press R2+Square. A red
meter appears on-screen. When the meter is full, shoot.

  - Rapid fire:

Choose the Kaempfer and arm it with a shotgun.
Move in one direction, then while running in the
opposite direction, shoot.
    Example: R1, then L1+Shoot.

  - Super dodge:

Jump the player's MS towards an enemy MS. When the
player's MS is landing and just before its feet touch the
ground, hold a direction and use the MS's secondary weapon.
The player's MS consequently dodges at high speed in the
chosen direction and attacks with its secondary weapon. The
player's MS may also use its melee weapon.
This way, even a super dodging, Cracker-throwing Zaku
I, without its wingmen, can evidently clear all ten
missions by Rank S. But the Special Bonus has a maximum
value of 30,000.

  - Kidou Senshi Gundam for PS2 save data:

In the options screen, the player can import Kidou
Senshi Gundam for PS2 save data into Kidou Senshi Gundam
Senki. Based on the save data, the following MS may appear,
but not in gallery and missions.
Zion: Acguy, Char Zaku II, Char Zgok, Dom, Garma Zaku
II, Gogg, Gouf, Hy-Gogg, Kaempfer, Zgok, Zock.
Federation: Alex, Blue Destiny, GM Sniper II, Ground
Combat Gundam, Guncannon, Gundam.
These MS are reportedly based on the MS in Tactics
Battle mode.

  - Mudrock's slashing:

While moving forwards, the Mudrock's third slash may
not come out. Albeit reportedly difficult to execute, the
Mudrock can consecutively slash an enemy MS till it buys
the farm.

  - In the MS gallery:

    Press L3 to activate/move a MS.

  - Deactivate wingmen:

Before a battle, when choosing the wingmen's MS, press
Square to deactivate (Stand By) a wingman and keep him out
of the battle. At the end of the battle, the player gets a
special bonus.

  - Using captured Zaku IIs:

After a Federation player unlocks/gets some Zaku IIs,
allocate the captured Zaku IIs to the player and all his
wingmen. Choose an appropriate mission.
When the mission begins, don't attack or lock-on any
enemy Zion MS. The enemy Zion MS won't attack the player
and his wingmen's Zaku IIs even when they are in range,
until the player attacks or lock-on an enemy Zion MS.

  - EXAM System:

The Efreet Kai and Blue Destiny are equipped with the
EXAM System. When the HP of the MS is 50% or below, its
EXAM System switches on, and its performance is increased.
Its dash is unlimited, and the damage of its attacks are
increased.

  - Enemy MS reinforcements, Zion:

After the Federation player clears Mission 10, gets the
ending, and replays the missions, the number and types of
Zion MS reinforcements in a mission may increase/improve.
Mission 1: Number of enemy MS increases by 7 to a
maximum of 14. Include the Acguy and Gouf.
Mission 2: Number of enemy MS increases by 7 to a
maximum of 14. Include the Dom and Gogg.
Mission 3: Number of enemy MS increases by 7 to a
maximum of 15. Include the Dom and Zaku II (J Type).
Mission 4: Number of enemy MS increases by 4 to a
maximum of 15. Include Norris's Gouf Custom.
Mission 5: Number of enemy MS increases by 1 to a
maximum of 11. Include the Zock, after the Azzam is KO
Mission 6: Number of enemy MS increases by 3 to a
maximum of 11. Include the Dom.
Mission 8: Number of enemy MS increases by 3 to a
maximum of 16. Include the Zgok.
Mission 9: Number of enemy MS increases by 1 to a
maximum of 13. Include the Xamel.
    Mission 7, 10: Unchanged.

  - Enemy MS reinforcements, Federation:

After the Zion player clears Mission 10, gets the
ending, and replays the missions, the number and types of
Federation MS reinforcements in a mission may
increase/improve.
Mission 5: Number of enemy MS remains at a maximum of
12, but Shirou's Ez-8 replaces the Gundam (G).
Mission 6: Number of enemy MS remains at a maximum of
18, but Amuro's Gundam replaces the GM (G).
Mission 8: Number of enemy MS remains at a maximum of
16, but Kai's Guncannon replaces the Guntank.
    Mission 1-4, 7, 9-10: Unchanged.

On the Federation side, in the nuclear storage
Torrington Base defense mission 14, if the player's wingmen
are Zaku IIs, and the player is a GM Sniper Custom II or
Zaku II, Uraki Kou appears to assist the player.

  - Special quotes:

In VS Mode, fight against a Dom. When a MS steps on
the Dom's head, its pilot exclaims: "ore wo humidai ni
sitaxa!?"
Also in VS Mode, certain combinations of the player MS
and the enemy MS and pilot cause special quotes. A few
examples:

Enemy MS + Pilot         Player MS

Garma Zaku II + Garma    Any Char MS
Alex + Christina         Mudrock or Zephyranthes
    Mudrock + Eiger          Any Gundam

  - Hints to get Rank S:

In a battle, overkill all enemy units, including
fighters, tanks, and turrets.
Keep the Life Remaining of the player's MS at 80% or
above. The rating counts only the Life Remaining of the
player's MS. When necessary, sacrifice the wingmen,
expend/exploit them as baits/shields, or Stand By them.
Clear a mission as fast as possible. Finish Time
seriously affects the rating. Don't slow down to think.
Example: Dash towards a tank, blow it up, and keep
moving.
After mission 10, do the If Mode. More enemy units
come out in the If Mode.

After the player clears all missions by Rank S,
General Revil honours a Federation player, and General
Gihren Zabi honours a Zion player.

  - Female chara's evaluation points:

After a mission, according to the mission results,
each of the three female chara in the player's unit may
grant the player a number of evaluation points. When the
player accumulates a certain female chara's evaluation
points to certain milestones, the player gets certain
bonuses, such as a MS upgrade or promotion.
In the Zion unit, Yuuki is tasked with Success Rate,
May is tasked with Life Remaining, and Jane is tasked with
Rank.
In the Federation unit, Noel is tasked with Success
Rate, Annie is tasked with Life Remaining, and Rachel is
tasked with Rank.

40             After Mission 10 is cleared: Additional
                   missions.

  - Female chara's movies, Zion:

Though Gundam Senki isn't a ren'ai sim, between
missions, the game may play a certain female chara's movie,
probably according to the amount of evaluation points that
female chara has granted to the player.

Later (2002.09.27): For the rest of us who don't have
this game, but are curious about the heroines' looks,
    http://isweb42.infoseek.co.jp/diary/wgalland/200208b.htm
has some screen shots of the heroines, but the links
to the related AVI files seem to be dead. (ToT)
My first impression of the Gundam Senki heroines is
(to quote Allo, Allo) "Don't they know there's a war going
on?" and (to quote Dragon Mirth) "Where am I going to and
why am I in a hand basket?"
They look more like school girls and their teachers on
a picnic. Sigh.

Later (2002.10.06): In Gundam:08MS, the Zion
Zanzibar-class mobile cruiser Kerguelen was named after the
Kerguelen Islands (French jurisdiction) in the southern
Indian Ocean, discovered by Yves-Joseph de
Kerguelen-Tremarec in 1772. The islands are famous for its
penguins.
Gundam fans nicknamed the Zion female soldier with
black hair and white hairband in Gundam:08MS episode 10 as
"Kerugerenko" (Kerguelenko, roughly means "Kerguelen Girl").
Her seiyuu in Gundam:08MS was also Araki Kae. In the
scene where she appeared, she had all of three lines:
"Aina sama, Norris Taisa kara no hatuen singou desu."
    "aka desu."
    "hai."
AFAIK, she subsequently reappeared in Kidou Senshi
Gundam for PS2 and Zeonic Front: Kidou Senshi Gundam 0079
for PS2.

6.   UNDOCUMENTED FEATURES

  - Friendly fire:

When a MS hits a friendly MS, the friendly MS staggers
but doesn't really receive any damage.

  - Gallop bug:

Jump onto and ride the Gallop, then fall down and into
the Gallop.
(Reminds me of MechWarrior 1 for DOS, where the
player's Mech can jump into an enemy Mech.)

  - Hy-Gogg's toughness:

In VS Mode, use a Hy-Gogg VS a Gundam. Let the Hy-Gogg
defend as the Gundam shoots its beam rifle at the Hy-Gogg.
A typical defending MS can bear 1-2 beam rifle shots, but
the Hy-Gogg can bear 5-6 shots.

  - Flying MS:

Use the EXAM System-equipped Efreet Kai or Blue
Destiny.
"Switch on" the EXAM System (see above). Press the
vernier button to jump. While in mid-air, dash forwards.
The thruster meter increases a bit, but the MS can fly far.
Or, side step or back step. Normally, the thruster
meter increases till it overheats, but it decreases
instead.

  - Guest chara:

Here's a list of the guest chara, or MS ace pilots,
who appear as friends and foes in the missions:

Aina Sahalin (Apsaras II): Zion or Federation mission
12.
Christina MacKenzie (Alex): Zion or Federation mission
13.
Amada Shirou (Ez-8): Zion mission 5.
Amuro Rei (Gundam): Zion mission 6, or Federation
mission 7.
Char Aznable (Char Zgok): Federation mission 7.
Kai Shiden (Guncannon): Zion mission 8.
Kajima Yuu (Blue Destiny): Zion mission 11.
Nimbus Schterzen (Efreet Kai): Federation mission 11.
Norris Packard (Gouf Custom): Zion or Federation
Mission 5.
Uraki Kou (Zephyranthes): Zion or Federation mission
14.

Karen Joshua (Ground Combat GM or Ground Combat
Gundam): VS Mode.
    Topp (Zaku I): VS Mode.
Adamsky (Dom, Dom Tropen, or Xamel): VS Mode.
Akahana (Acguy or Hy-Gogg): VS Mode.
Bernard Wiseman (Zaku II Kai): VS Mode.
Bob (Dom Tropen or Xamel): VS Mode.
    Braskinev (Zock): VS Mode.
    Eiger (Mudrock): VS Mode.
    Gadem (Zaku I): VS Mode.
    Gaia (Dom): VS Mode.
Garma Zabi (Garma Zaku II): VS Mode.
Ji-n (Zaku II Type J): VS Mode.
    Johnnie Ridden (?): ?
Kobayashi Hayato (Guntank): VS Mode. His quotes change
when the player uses Dom.
    Leon Ri-fuxei (random): VS Mode.
Master P Layer (GM Sniper II): VS Mode.
    Matsunaga Shin (?): ?
    Maximilian Burger (random): VS Mode.
Mikhail Kaminsky (Gogg, Hy-Gogg, or Kaempfer): VS Mode.
Norris Packard (Char Zaku II, Gouf, or Gouf Custom):
VS Mode.
Philip Hughes (Blue Destiny or Cold Climate GM): VS
Mode.
    Ramba Ral (Gouf): VS Mode.
Steiner Hardy (Kaempfer or Zgok Experimental): VS Mode.
Terry Sanders Jr (Ground Combat Gundam or Guncannon):
VS Mode.
Visch Donahue (Garma Zaku II or Ground Combat
Gelgoog): VS Mode.

  - Female seiyuu:

Here's a list of the female seiyuu (voice actors) who
perform in the game, AFAIK.
(Most of them belong to I'm Enterprise. Personally, I
prefer seiyuu who belong to Aoni Production.)

Zion female soldier (Kerguelenko) :: Araki Kae
Corporal Nagasato Yuuki :: Asano Masumi
First Lieutenant Rachel Mirusutexi-n :: Hayakawa Yukako
Master Sergeant Karen Joshua :: Koyama Mami
Captain Murrue Ramius   :: Mituisi Kotono
Private First Class Annie Brevig :: Nagayama Nana
Corporal Noel Anderson  :: Nasu Megumi
May Ka-uxin             :: Nigo Mayako
Master Sergeant Topp    :: Sakakibara Yosiko
Captain Jane Conty      :: Tomioka Yukiko
First Lieutenant Christina MacKenzie :: Hayasibara Megumi
Aina Sahalin            :: Inoue Kikuko Oneetyan

(I don't feel like typing up the male chara and male
seiyuu's names, but I don't think Mid_rikawa Hik_ru is in
the game. Yes, sexism in action. Flame me.)

May is a civilian engineer and has no rank. Possible
transliterations of Ka-uxin are: Carwyn, Kerwin, Kirwin.
Aina is a civilian test pilot and has no rank.
