1.  Introduction
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gregory Horror Show is about a boy or girl (I will assume the player picks the
boy character for simplicity, as far as I can tell, there is no difference in
how the game is played) who wakes in front of a strange hotel, which is run by
a rat named Gregory.  Gregory seems to had been expecting the player and leads
him to the guest room.  When the player goes to sleep, he is greeted by the god
of death, who tells him that he will show him the way back to reality if the
player can collect all of the souls in the hotel.  This game is part of a
project similar to project .hack in that it is just part of a story.  There
is a television show, which I believed came out first, it is a CGI animation
and looks almost exactly like the cut scenes in the game.  I would not be
surprised if there was a manga also, but I have never seen it.

As of date, this is Japanese only game, it is supposed to come out in America
sometime early in 2004.  I do not intend on buying the American version and
doubt that anything important to beating the game will be changed.  However,
if something should be changed and someone sends me an e-mail about it, I will
add it, crediting it's author, of course.

So, is this game worth playing? I think it is an interesting game, but I feel
that it is not really worth $50.  The game is really geared towards a young
audience and thus the plot is very simplistic.  I guess if you get into the
meaning of the other guest's afflictions you can give the plot a bit more
depth.  The "puzzles", if you want to call them that, are extremely simple and
for the most part ridiculously easy.  So much so, that I somewhat doubt anyone
will need this faq, other than people playing the Japanese version with limited
Japanese knowledge.  If you are studying Japanese then I feel that I can
definitely recommend the Japanese version as a somewhat fun way of practicing
listening and reading skills, though depending on your level it may too easy.
Also, the game is extremely short, the first time I played, counting wandering
around and dying, I beat the game in under 7 hours (The in-game clock read 5:30
hours).  Using this faq, I would not be surprised if one could complete the
game in 2-3 hours easily, maybe even less.  To the game's credit, the game
engine itself is about as close to perfect as one gets, I did not encounter
any glitches of any kind and the controls are very responsive.  In closing, the
game is fun, but it might not be worth the price given how short it is.  One
other thing, the game is not even remotely scary (Well, it might be if you are
5 years old), I really do not think it was ever meant to be either, so if that
is what you were looking for, um... sorry.  It is however, funny a lot of the
time, in a cute way.

2.  Game Controls
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is for the Japanese version, I imagine that the only difference in
controls between the Japanese version and the American version is that the
American version will probably switch the usage of the circle and X buttons,
as in Japan the circle is used to confirm things and X button is used to cancel
things, as opposed to America, where X is confirm and circle to cancel.

D-pad - Move character select items in menus
Left Analog stick -  Move character select items in menus
Right Analog stick - Move camera
Select - Map, if you have one
Start - Main Menu
Square - Knock, look in boxes, etc.

          corners
Circle - Action button, confirm selections

R2 - Center camera, flip pages in menus

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.  Menus
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is for the people with limited Japanese playing the Japanese version.
The main menu is accessed by pressing Triangle.

The Commands are on the right side.  They are, from top to bottom: Items, Hand
Items (Event Items), Map, Spirits (checklist), options, load (a game),
Return (to game).

Under options, the selections are, from top to bottom: Control type(2D/3D),
Vibration (One of the few times I have ever seen that in kanji), Sound type
(Stereo/Mono), Background music volume, Sound effect volume, Screen position,
Restore defaults, Return (to menu).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.  Maps
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maps are one the most important items in the game, if not the most important,
because they let you see where the guests are at all times.  Here are the
locations of all the maps in the game.

Hotel
-----

First Floor - Giant Robo told me this one, just talk to Gregory during his
first round of the hotel, you might need to do this before
getting Neko Zombie's spirit, but I am fairly sure that this
can be done after (The first time I played the game, I remember
getting the first floor map after the second map)

Second Floor - In Room 202

Basement
--------

First Floor - 1st floor basement, in the first room , in one of the corners
Second Floor - 2nd floor basement, Just walk down the hall, too easy
Third Floor - 3rd floor basement, third right-hand side hall

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5.  Solutions
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This section lists how to get each guest's spirit in the order that they are
introduced, using their english names, which is shown during their
introduction.

Zombie Cat / Neko Zombie
------------------------
The first guest, if you want to call him that, more like prisoner, is the
zombie cat, which is also the easiest one in the game.  To meet him, look
through the keyhole of the door to the left (It is a big metal door, it looks
like it is from a prison).  He will tell you to get the key from the lobby.
Go back pass the door you came from (This is your room), turn left and go
though the door, by the time you get to the center of the room, you should see
the front desk.  Talk to Gregory, he will eventually leave (as it is time to
make his rounds through the hotel), when he leaves, get the key (It sparkles).
Go back to the cat's door and unlock it.  He will tell you some things and
then will ask you to walk outside the room and look through the keyhole.  He
will tell you that his weakness is sweet things (food).  Go back through the
door and talk to the cat again, he will ask you what his favorite food is, he
gives you a list to pick from, the only sweet thing on it is chocolate, which
is the fourth item on list.  After that his spirit will be put in a bottle and
you can pick it up.  After that a list of things you can ask him appears, you
can read all he has to say or you can select the last item on the list to
finish up.  "Use" the bed to go to sleep and give the god of death the spirit
you just collected (Default choice on the list).

Warning: Although Neko Zombie will never chase or hurt you, late in the game,
sometimes he will beat you up and take food items from you.  I am not
not sure what causes him to do this or whether or not this is his
late game behavior or if it is just a random event or because of what
        time it is.

Catherine
---------
Once you get up, you will go back to Neko Zombie and the intro for Catherine
begins.  After that you can ask the cat some more questions if you like.
Leave the cat's room and you will meet James, Gregory's nephew.  James will
drop a banana peel on the floor and almost immediately, Gregory will pick it
up.  You might want to look around the hotel now.  Nothing can hurt you at the
moment, so now would be a good time, even though you cannot go many places yet.
I will assume that you know where the main places are from now on.  Keep a look
out for maps to the hotel, they also keep track of where the guests are.  If
Catherine sees you, she will run away.  Anyway, Gregory threw the banana peel
into the trash bin in the kitchen, so go pick it up.  Place it in the middle of
one of the hallways.  Then go find Catherine and chase her all the way back
down the hallway that you put the banana peel.  When she goes over in she will
trip and you can pick the bottled spirit up.  You will have to give the spirit
to the god of death to continue further into the game.

Judgment Boy
-------------
Judgment Boy is the next on the list.  Go to Catherine's room, there will be a
book in front of her bed, on the floor.  This is Gregory's "dirty" book, dirty
as in etchi.  Pick it up and show the book to Gregory and he will go nuts, he
will ask you for the book, give it to him (default selection).  He will take
the book regardless, but you need to give it to him.  He will tell you that he
will leave another book, which is in the library.  You might have to wait until
he finishes with his book, but the book will be in the library, on the middle
shelf.  You can tell that this book is different from the rest of the normal
books because it goes in your hand item list.  Equip the book and show it to
Judgment Boy, he will give you his little speech and ask you about what you
would do in a certain situation, which is exactly the situation that you are
in.  When you are given a choice, select the second option (Something about not
giving up, I think).  You will know if you picked the right choice because the
dollar sign he carries will fall and break.  He will then give you his spirit.
If you picked the wrong choice, nothing happens, you will just have to do it
again.  If you ever need Gregory's book again, it will be in the storeroom.
Judgment Boy will never chase or hurt you.

Lost Doll - Room 205
--------------------
Lost Doll is fairly easy.  It would seem that she lost her doll.  There is a
gift shop in the lobby.  Gather up enough items and buy the doll (It looks
exactly like her).  Talk to Gregory in the gift shop, you will get a list,
select the fourth listing and the doll will be the list item on the list.  It
will take 5 common items to buy it.  Equip the doll and find her (She is almost
always upstairs standing in front of the door to her room.  Give her the doll
and she will start playing with it (Musical Notes appear over her head).  The
spirit will be on the bed in her room.  She will lose the doll again after a
while, so be quick.

Cactus Gunman - Room 204
-------------------------
Cactus Gunman has the spirit.  It seems that Cactus Gunman is very paranoid.
Just wait until he goes into a room.  When he does, run up to the door and
knock on it and then run and hide.  Do this three times, it is will not work
if he sees you.  After the third time, he will run away, leaving his spirit
behind.  You have to be careful if you do this while he is in his room as it is
right next to Lost Doll, you might have to buy her another doll to get rid of
her.  You really do not need to worry to much about Cactus Girl, she almost
never leaves her room.

Mummy Papa and Mummy Dog - Room 106
-----------------------------------
Mummy Papa has the spirit.  It seems because of his injuries, he will often
lose conscious.  Just watch him go through his daily routine and grab the
spirit when he falls down (Stars appear over his head/body).  It might take
awhile to do this.  Another thing you can do is wait until he goes to sleep and
quietly sneak into his room and steal the spirit then.  It will be sitting on
the table between their beds.

TV-fish
-------
TV-fish is a bit harder to find because it does not have a room and disappears
from time to time.  It is usually on the third floor of the basement
though.  You will need the remote control, but first, go to the gift shop and
buy some batteries.  They are under miscellaneous items (4th selection), one
from the bottom (Obviously, there are pictures), they will cost 5 common items.
Now go to the first floor of the basement (The entrance to the basement is in
the courtyard).  The remote control is in room 3.  Use the batteries and equip
the remote.  The remote shoots a signal out, it is a little difficult to hit
something with it so aim carefully.  There are three ways to find TV-fish, you
can look for it on the maps, it might take a while for it to show up, so be
prepared to read a book, sleep or use some time fruits to pass the time.  Once
it shows up, go to where ever it is and shoot it with the remote.  Second, you
can watch the guests and they will often give a time and a place that it will
appear, or the third and easiest option is to go in the bar on the second floor
and knock on the jukebox.  The jukebox will look like it is going to short out
and then the TV-fish will appear.  If it sees you, it will run or teleport away
, so try to sneak up on it.  TV-fish will never chase or hurt you.

Roulette boy - First floor of the basement
------------------------------------------
Roulette boy obviously likes to play games.  Go down to the third level of the
basement.  There are a lot of side halls, there is a dice on the fifth
left-side hall, pick it up and equip it.  Now go find roulette boy and talk to
him.  He will ask you to play a game of roulette.  It is actually a simple
board game you play with Gregory, where you spin to get a number and move that
number of spaces.  Each space does something if you land on it.  Even in the
Japanese version, the space names are in English, so you should not have
trouble figuring out how to beat it.  The menu selections for people playing
the Japanese game from top to bottom are: Roulette (spin), Items, Opponent's
condition, Look at the map (For the board), check the rules and Give up.  Once
you beat it, roulette boy will give you the spirit that he carries.

Hell's Chef
-----------
It seems that if the flame on top of the chef's head goes out, he will not be
able to move, so you will have to blow it out.  The chef can be a bit of
trouble though.  Go to the kitchen and drop 7-8 items into the big soup pot
on the stove (Across from the door to the dinning room).  When the chef goes by
to check on the soup (might take a while depending on the time), he will get
angry and chase you (You will know when he starts, he will start the chase
regardless of where you are.  Just get him to chase you into the storeroom,
where Gregory's dirty book was at the beginning of the game.  This is the only
place in the game where the wind blows.  His flame will go out.  Gregory will
come in the room, relight the flame and leave with the Chef.  His spirit will
be on the floor.  The chef can be hard to beat because you might have to run
half way across the hotel and any guests who see you will chase and hurt you.
So, try to time it at a quiet part of the day.

Clock Master and My Son
-----------------------
My Son has the spirit.  Go to the storeroom.  My Son's blue toolbox is near the
clock.  Look in it and you will find a screwdriver, equip it and show it to
Clock Master.  He will get angry and chase you.  He can teleport (He actually
stops time and just walks up to you, but it looks like teleporting), so be
careful.  Unfortunately for him, he can only teleport three times, on the
fourth time, he will pass out.  If you search you will get a pocket watch that
can pass the time.  Anyway, when he passes out, find My Son, once again the
map will make your life a lot easier.  When you show him the driver, he will
call his dad, but of course, Clock Master cannot help him.  He will trade the
spirit for the screwdriver.  This pair can be hard to beat because much like
the chef, the guests might catch you while Clock Master is chasing you.  To
make things harder on you, My Son hangs around the other guests a lot of the
time, so try to time it so he is alone.

Angel Dog - Heaven and Hell room on the first floor of the basement
-------------------------------------------------------------------
It seems that at 6.00 in the evening (18.00), there is a football (soccer) game
on that everyone wants to watch, but cannot because Gregory and Angel dog are
arguing in the lodge.  Go get Gregory's dirty book again (In the storeroom) and
give it to him right before 6.00.  Since he will be "occupied" for about an
hour, Angel dog can watch the TV.  Watch her through the lodge door keyhole,
she will leave her spirit for you to pick up on the table.  It is funny to note
that everyone wanted to watch the game, but the only one who does is Angel dog.

Judgment Boy Gold
------------------
Judgment Boy Gold is just an upgrade to Judgment Boy.  Go and talk to him
and two judgment boys will join him.  They will each ask you two questions and
Judgment Boy Gold will ask you one.  The questions have to do with the guest's
daily routines.  Answer all the questions correctly and he will give you the
spirit.  Jugdment Boy Gold will never chase or hurt you, not that it matters
the game is almost over.  Give the spirit to the god of death to go on to the
last part.

Gregory's Mama
------------
Once you get through all the cut scenes, you can visit the cat if you want to.
Go to the door in the lobby.  Of course, Gregory Mama is not going to let you
get out that easily.  She will knock you out and throw you in the basement.
This is not an area that you have been to before.  When you wake up, go
through the door, picking up items as needed.  You will eventually get to a
door with skulls on the side, go through here to get to Mama's room and get
the key in the box.  There are a lot of items in here, so do not forget to
look around and knock on things.  Go back to the skull door and go the way
that you have not been yet.   When you go through the door, you will know
where you are.  You can talk to the cat if you want, but at any rate, go back
to the lobby to face Gregory Mama.  The door to the outside will be locked, so
you cannot just leave.  Gregory Mama can do a few things.  One she can teleport
next to you, she can chase you and hit you with her scepter.  When she gets
tired, she will get mad and throw a fireball at you.  When she catches her
breath, position yourself so that the door to the outside is behind you.  When
she throws the fireball, get out of the way.  The door will show damage if the
fireball hit it.  Just keep doing this until the door falls apart.

Gregory
-------
It is easy to "beat" Gregory, I put it here for completeness.  Gregory will
leave his body and become a big white ghost, he will try to stop you by
draining your mental gauge.  Just try your best to dodge him and go towards
the light.  That is it, the game is over.
