| 2 |  | VERSION & HISTORY |
|___|  *===================*

> 1.0   ~ 2001
This guide began as merely a series of notes.  The first were on paper
and were later transferred onto a Word document and printed.  Consisted
of only the charts, as appear here in section 7.

1.0    Apr 2005
Upon discovery of sites which allow users to post guides, this guide was
revamped in order to meet certain characteristics, such as the maximum
  characters per line limit.

1.1    Dec 2005
Guide was made into a "complete" document, including notes on the basics
of the game, legal disclaimer, credits, etc.

1.2    Sep 2008
Given a serious intent to publish on the Internet this document was
again "revamped"; pretty much all content other than the charts was
added.  I stayed up until 5 a.m., during Hurricane Ike, while the power
went out and the computer was running on a backup battery.  This document
really is a labor of love. =)

My thoughts and prayers go out to my fellow Houstonians in the aftermath
of what turned out to be quite a terrible storm.  ~ 9/14/08

| 3 |  | GUIDE TO THE GUIDE / BASIC INFORMATION |
|___|  *========================================*

A true walkthrough is unrealistic for this game, as there is no "right" way
to proceed from beginning to end.  This guide may be handy in the event you
wish to go through it and buy as few cars as possible.  The charts use the
list of cars that can be won, using those cars in races where those cars are
required/usable.  >>This guide may not be 100% accurate.<<

         - - - - -

       ------------
       SERIES RACES
       ------------

Important Tip: There are some races in which you must race a series, after
which you will win one of several cars, usually different.  If it's, say, a
ten-race series, you can save after any race -- in this case, save after
race #9.  Depending on how may points you've accumulated vs. the other
drivers, you can either skip or play race 10.  If you don't like the car you
win after race 10, simply reboot the system and start over, as you will
continue from the save point after race 9.  The car you win will be random
(usually one of four), and if you keep doing this you can win the car you
want eventually.  You can perpetually win cars from series events (or
endurance events), but you'll have to play this entire series again in order
to win each additional car.

       | 3A |  | STARTING OFF - 1st CAR |
       |____|   \______________________/

As mentioned, there is no "right" way to play through this game; this guide
written for those who wish to WIN as many cars as possible, and BUY as few as
possible.  There are several ways to go no matter how you want to play. First
is a list of possibilities in the event you DO wish to just buy a car, and
then a list of options if you wish to WIN your first car.

       ----------------------
       PURCHASING A FIRST CAR
       ----------------------

If you choose to just buy an initial car, you have only 18,000 credits and
will only be allowed to purchase one of the following:

/-------------------------------------------------------------\
| Chrysler     PT Cruiser                      FF    17,980Cr |
| Daihatsu     Mira TR-XX Avanzato R           FF    11,140Cr |
| Daihatsu     Storia X4                       4WD   13,900Cr |
| Mazda        Demio GL-X                      FF    14,660Cr |
| Mazda        Miata MX-5                      FR    16,900Cr |
| Mazda        Miata MX-5                      FR    17,000Cr |
| Suzuki       Alto Works Suzuki Sports Ltd.   4WD   12,220Cr |
| Toyota       Sprinter Trueno GT Apex         FR    13,550Cr |
| Toyota       Vitz Euro Edition               FF    12,880Cr |
| Toyota       Vitz RS 1.5                     FF    14,530Cr |
| Volkswagon   New Beetle 2.0                  FF    15,930Cr |
\-------------------------------------------------------------/

The less you spend on a car, the more money you will have left over to spend
on performance parts and modifications, which may be necessary in order to
win a race (stock cars usually lose against cars of the same kind).  Some of
the cars in this list are usable for races which are limited to that specific
kind of car.

Of these:

The PT Cruiser may be used on the Stars and Stripes race (although it may do
 poorly).

The Mira TR-XX and the Alto Works are usable on the Lightweight Cup -- I
recommend the Alto Works, as the 4WD will be quite handy.  The Alto Works
is technically usable for the 4wd race, and the Mira for the FF race
respectively, although neither is a great choice even with full
 modification.

Similarly, the Storia and the Demio are also technically usable for the 4wd
and FF races respectively, but again neither is a great choice even when
 fully modified.

The Miatas can race in the Spider & Roadster races (available in Beginner
and Amateur leagues - but will be more useful in Beginner.  Other cars will
 be available for Amateur).

The Trueno is a good choice because it can take the most modifications out
of all the cars in this list.  It is usable for the 80's car races in both
Beginner and Amateur.  It may be a poor choice for purchase because you
can win one in the very first beginner event, the Sunday Cup.

The Vitz can be used for the Vitz race in Beginner league. Note that you'll
win a Vitz in the FF challenge, but if I'm not mistaken that Vitz is the
wrong model, whereas the one you buy is usable.  So, you may have to buy
one anyway, but you might want to save this until after you've had a few
beers because even fully modified it's a slow li'l pokey-car and useless
 for everything else.

The VW Beetle can be used for the Beetle race in Beginner league. All you'll
win from that is another Beetle, though, so again save that for a time when
you have patience for a pokey-car race.  The Beetle makes for a mediocre
car in the FF race (fully modified, it's fairly quick.)

       -------------------
       WINNING A FIRST CAR
       -------------------

There are two ways one can go if one wishes to WIN their first car. One way
is to get all gold trophies on any one of the license tests. The other way is
to get 1st place on all of the "time trial" challenges in arcade mode.

          Via the License Test
          --------------------

There are seven license tests: if you can get gold trophies on all 8 of the
tests within any one license, you get a free car. The easiest license to do
this on is the "B" license.  This will earn you a Miata LS.  There are other
cars which can be won on the other license tests.

If you should win this Miata LS, there are 2 ways to go, depending on your
patience.  If you want you can just jump into the rest of Simulation Mode,
starting with the Sunday and Clubman cups (beginner league).  You can use the
prize cars from these races to win other races, and continue to win more cars
or spend money to enhance the ones you've won.

In Simulation Mode, under Endurance races, there is a race especially for the
Miatas, called the "Roadster Endurance".  One of the conditions for this race
is NO tuning.  Since there are several models of Miatas which are eligible
for this race, one will of course want the FASTEST of the stock models. As it
happens, this is the LS model -- the one you win from the B license test.  It
is possible to BUY an LS model for this race.  If you have decided to jump
into the rest of simulation mode first before tackling the Endurance races
you may have opted to enhance this Miata.  For the most part, this is OK; any
of the parts you've added MUST be removed prior to entering the Roadster
Endurance.  You can remove these parts under "settings", which appears before
you start any race you've entered, or under "Run and Settings" in the "Home"
menu.

There are a few exceptions: some items CANNOT be "removed" once they are
added. These include:
- Porting and polishing the engine
- Performing a "Full Balance" on the engine
- Increasing the displacement of the engine; or
- Performing a Weight Reduction on your car

What is most especially important about this race is the PRIZE CAR. There are
4 prize cars available for winning the Roadster Endurance; unfortunately, the
prize car you win is chosen at random from these 4.  One of them is the
F688/S.  For those of you unfamiliar with the game, this is an "Indy" style
Formula One car.  It's a Mid-Engine, Rear-Wheel drive Naturally-Aspirated car
and will make dog meat out of just about anything.  It's only drawback is a
top speed of about 220 MPH, making it a poor choice against other supercars
on the Test Course.

** Look under SECTION 7: CHARTS > ENDURANCE > ROADSTER for more info **

- - - - -

The 2nd easiest license to get all gold medals on is the Rally License; this
will give you an Impreza Rally car.  This will allow you to race Rally races,
and the bonus cars you get in the Rally races are better than the ones you
get in most of the beginner league races, so this may be a good place to
start.  Know that achieving all golds on the Rally license is far easier
said than done, and it will probably be much more fun to just jump in the
game than to play the same track over and over andoverandover.

          Via the Time Trials
          -------------------

Another way to obtain a free car is to "win" the TIME TRIALS in arcade mode.
This is the only time where you can win something usable for Simulation Mode
from the Arcade Mode.  There are ten time trials to beat.  On each one, you
will see the "top 3" times listed.  "Beating" the time trial means getting a
faster time than the person in the #1 spot, and putting your name on the
board.  If you achieve this great goal, you get the PANOZ ESPERANTE GT-1.

Although this isn't the absolute fastest car in the game it's a hot contender
amongst the supercars which are.  With this you can easily beat MOST of
simulation mode.  Note: it's a front-engine/rear-wheel-drive car ("FR"), and
naturally aspirated ("NA").

Note that beating the time trials is essentially like trying to obtain all
gold trophies on the super license, only just a tad easier.

        ____     ___________
       |    |   /           \
       | 5A |  | SINGLE RACE |
       |____|   \___________/

Self-explainatory; you get to race. This can be fun if you're a beginner just
playing for the first time.  You don't have to beat any license tests or
buy/win any cars in order to play.  Note that as you play the "single races"
your "percentage complete" will increase (you can check this out in
simulation mode, under the "home" icon).  Beating ALL the single races can
take quite a while, as there's quite a bit to it.  Once you choose to play a
single race in arcade mode, you'll be asked to do 3 things:

 1. Select a difficulty level
 2. Select a Track
 3. Select a class of car (and then a car)

   DIFFICULTY LEVEL

Your choices of difficulty level include Easy, Normal and Hard.

   SELECT TRACK

The tracks are arranged in "areas".  For help with this, see "Clear Status".
You will only be allowed to race on one of six tracks at first; this is
Area A.  You can race them in any order.  Once you have beaten everything
in Area A you will have unlocked Area B; once you have beaten everything in
Area B you will unlock Area C, and so on and so forth.  Once you have beaten
ALL the races you get a prize: no, not a free car for use in simulation mode
- you get to watch the ending credits.  There are two versions available to
watch.

The difficulty level has an effect on what you earn as you progress through
the Arcade Single Races.  If you select "Easy" mode (for each race in one
Area), then by the time you've cleared that area all you get is another Area
to beat, until you beat all available tracks.

If you select "Normal" mode, then as you beat the tracks (and hence Areas)
you not only unlock the next Area and set of tracks it contains, but also
you will have one or two additional cars added to the small list from each
class available.

If you select "Hard" mode, then you get credit for having beaten both the
"Easy" and "Normal" difficulty settings for that particular track even if
you haven't played that particular track at those respective difficulty
levels.  Once you clear a certain area, you (of course) unlock the next
area.  Not only will you get the added car from the Normal mode, you also
get an additional car for having beaten the Area in Hard mode.

   SELECT CLASS & CAR

There are 6 classes of cars:
  Class C - low powered
Class B - medium powered cars
  Class A - performance cars
Class S - "Super" cars, i.e. Race Cars
Rally   - Only usable for Dirt tracks (rally races)
Home Garage - you can use any of the cars in your home garage from
Simulation mode (if you have any).  Note: you will not be allowed to use
a particular car from your home garage on a dirt track if that car does
not have dirt tires purchased for it.

As mentioned, each "class" (except for your home garage) will only have so
many cars at first.  As you progress through the Areas you'll notice another
car added here and there to a certain class.

The FULL list of cars - including those which are "won", is:

A "just for kicks" session which does not add anything to the percentage of
game completion.  Pick your track (every track in the game is available),
pick your car (from the list available under "Single Race" *IF* you've won
those cars from Single Race), take as many laps as you want and record your
best time.

       | 5D |  | 2-PLAYER BATTLE |
       |____|   \_______________/

Also self-explainatory.  Cars can be picked from the "Single Race" list, or
loaded from one's home garage.  If the person you're playing against has
cars loaded in a garage on a 2nd memory card, this card can be inserted into
slot 2 and loaded as a "guest" garage.

        ____     ____________

Very Useful!  This shows what races you've completed under Single Race, and
at what level.  It also shows what areas have been unlocked, and what races
are in those areas.  If you complete a race at the "Normal" setting, the dot
for the "Easy" setting will show as complete, even if the race was never
actually won at the easy level.  Likewise, if you complete the race under
"Hard" you will be given credit for having beaten that race at both the easy
and normal difficulty levels.

ALSO...

Arcade Mode > LOAD GARAGE

| 6 |  | SIMULATION MODE |
|___|  *=================*

Welcome to the Simulation Mode portion of the disk. This is where the meat
of the game is.  Once in Simulation Mode, the main screen from here is not in
any order - it's more like a map where the arrow can be moved to different
icons on the screen.  Numerous sub-menus appear from there.

        ____     _______
       |    |   /       \
       | 6A |  | GT AUTO |
       |____|   \_______/

There are 3 options available here: Car Wash, Oil Change, and Wheel Shop.

CAR WASH - makes your car look all shiny again.  The paint job on any car
will actually start to look dull after so many races.  Does not seem to
affect anything other than cosmetics (shiny cars don't seem faster).

OIL CHANGE - a "secret" within the game.  As cars rack up miles their oil
gets dirty.  As the oil gets dirty they lose performance, mainly horse-
power.  In fact, when the oil gets dirty enough the oil lamp icon will
appear on the "dashboard" in the (needle) speedometer. And the secret?
If you win or buy a car, brand-new zero-miles, and take it in for an
oil change BEFORE driving it you get a slight boost in horsepower. Its
never very much, but hey every little bit helps right?

WHEEL SHOP - You get to purchase new rims for your ride.  This is the only
cosmetic enhancement you get to make for your car.  Unlike Gran Turismo 2,
you don't have the option of doing a "racing stripes" modification to your
cars.  Once a set of rims has been purchased it will be available for all
your cars at no additional cost.

        ____     _____________
       |    |   /             \
       | 6C |  | HOME / GARAGE |
       |____|   \_____________/

Clicking the "Home" icon will bring up another menu with 6 options:

GARAGE - This is where you find all the cars you've won/bought for
simulation mode.  You can choose to get in your car, sell it, examine the
specific specs or change the wheels.

GAME STATUS - This shows your progress through Simulation Mode.  For one, it
shows the "percentage complete" -- when this reaches 100% you've beaten
the game.  It will also show the highest level of license you've achieved,
as well as the number of respective bronze, silver and gold trophies
you've acquired on the license tests.

TRADE - Used to purchase cars between one memory card and another.

RUN & SETTING - There are 6 tracks to choose from:
    Midfield
    Apricot Hill
    Laguna Seca
    Test Course
    Complex String
You can take any car in your garage.  You can change the settings, and/or
add and remove parts purchased from the tune shop.  These settings will be
saved if you wish to then take the same car later on to a race.

SAVE - Saves your progress in the game.

LEGAL CREDITS - [ self-explanatory ]

        ____     _________
       |    |   /         \
       | 6D |  | GO RACE ! |
       |____|   \_________/

In short this is all the races in Simulation Mode. There are 5 categories:

    Beginner League
    Amateur League
    Professional League
    Rally Races
    Endurance Races

For more specific information, see Section 7 of this guide; "CHARTS".

        ____     _____________
       |    |   /             \
       | 6E |  | LICENCE TESTS |
       |____|   \_____________/

This is in fact a crucial part of the game.  In Simulation Mode nearly every
race will require you to have a certain license in order to enter the race.
There are 6 licenses to obtain altogether.  They are:

 - The B License
 - The A License
 - The International B License
 - The International A License
 - The Super License
 - The Rally License

On each license there are 8 tests to pass.  On each test there are 3 times to
beat.  If you can beat the lowest time presented you get a gold trophy.  If
you beat the 2nd lowest time presented you get a silver trophy.  If your
score exactly matches the fastest time, you still only get a silver trophy,
because you have to BEAT the certain times, not match them.  Likewise if you
beat the 3rd time presented (the longest, and therefore slowest one) you will
get a bronze trophy.  You only need the bronze in order to pass the test.

* If on any license you manage to get ALL gold trophies for each of the 8
tests you get a FREE CAR. *

        ____     ____________
       |    |   /            \
       | 6F |  | MACHINE TEST |
       |____|   \____________/

Another "just for kicks" section of the game, which does not add to the
percentage of game completion.  You get to take whatever car you have
selected from the home garage and see either how fast it accelerates and/or
it's top speed.  For acceleration you can choose 0-400 meters or 0-1000
meters.  Top speed is measured with one lap around the test course.  You will
get to enter your name after each run, so you can see which of your cars are
the fastest.  This can be useful if you wish to adjust the settings of a car
prior to taking it on a race on the test course.

|   |  *============*
| 7 |  | CHARTS !!! |
|___|  *============*

Following are charts showing the various races.

- Following the name of the race will be the list of limitations. If there
are either no limitations, or simple ones (like certain drivetrains, etc.)
these will be listed after a hyphen (-) to the right of the name of the
race. If there is a list of eligible cars for a certain race, these cars
will be listed underneath the name of the race, indented over 5 spaces.

* If one of the eligible cars can be obtained in another race, there will be
an asterisk (*) next to it; details on where to obtain that car will be
 listed below, following an asterisk.

^ Following the list of eligible cars/limitations you'll see the prize car(s)
which can be won in that race. Next to the prize car's name you may see a
carrot symbol (^). This indicates that this prize can can be useful in
another race. Details will follow below, after a carrot symbol.

** If you see the double asterisk, this will provide information on tips for
finding cars in other races which may be especially good for winning that
 race.

{} If you see an item in braces, it will be in the details of where a prize
car may be obtained.  If the prize car is one of several which can be won
from a series or endurance race, then the name of this series/endurance
 race will appear in {braces}.

If a certain race only has ONE prize car, that means you can only win that
car ONCE -- so it's a good idea not to sell that car.  Sometimes you can buy
it, but sometimes if you sell it then it's gone for good. This rule of thumb
applies especially to the rally cars.

ELISE TROPHY
    Lotus Elise 190 *
    Motorsport Elise
Lotus Elise 190 -- 4 prizes, all the same
  * Lotus Elise 190: Amateur {European Championship}
** Even though an Elise 190 can be won elsewhere, even fully loaded it
will likely lose against the Motorsport Elise.  If it's near-stock,
you may not have a Motorsport Elise as a challenger, but do you really
want to race a stock 190 vs. others which may or may not be stock?
So, you may have to buy a Motorsports Elise; and the more you modify
it, the more Motorsports you'll likely have as competitors.

CLIO TROPHY
    Renault Clio Sports V6 24V
Renault Clio Sports Race Car *
VW Beetle Cup Car -- 4  prizes, all the same
  * Clio Sports Car: Endurance {Super Speedway}
** Highly suggested to buy the Clio Race Car, or win it from the Super
Speedway, in order to beat this race.

    TVR Tuscan Speed Six
TVR Speed 12
TVR Griffith 500 (3 of 4 prize cars are these) ^

Mazda 787B ^^
** Use the same trick as for the Super Speedway Endurance: Take the
Escudo, put a rubber band over the gas pedal, and let it ride the
walls for these 20 long, boring laps.
^^ Tuned right, this MR turbo car can almost keep up with the Formula
cars; it ranks with the Escudo and the Toyota GT-One.

                       RALLY RACES
    ----------------------------------------------

** Because all rally races have the same entry requirements, only the prize
cars associated with each race will be listed below.  There are cars other
than Rally cars which can be used in the races, and although they will more
often be 4WD, sometimes other drivetrains will work.  One example is the
Mazda RX-7 Infini III (although it's not all that fast).  In order to see
if a particular car is eligible for Rally races, check to see if it comes
with or can be equipped with DIRT TIRES.  Most or all Lancer Evolutions and
Nissan Skylines can be used well.  I believe that any car is eligible to run
the two "wet" races.  There are a few times in the game when one can win a
car specifically labelled as a "Rally" car.  These are listed below, before
the event-prize list.

In Amateur League:
- Evolution Meeting - Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Rally Car

In Professional League:
- 4WD Challenge - Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII Rally Car Prototype
- Polyphony Digital Cup - {Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak Edition}
  (THE ESCUDO IS AWESOME!!!)

In Endurance Races:
- Passage to Colosseo (Rome Circuit) - {Lancia Delta HF Integrale Rally Car}

Lister Storm V12 Race Car
Mine's Skyline GT-R V-Spec
Honda S2000 LM Race Car
F094 / H
** Most if not all race cars are ineligble to participate, because they
come with added parts which you cannot remove.  Best way is to take
your fastest cars and click on the "information" icon before "entering"
the race -- just be sure they haven't had ported/polished heads, engine
balancing, enhanced displacement, or a weight-reduction.  Also make
sure they have all other parts removed (if added); you can remove these
parts either in "Run & Settings" in the Home menu, or by entering
another race (like the Sunday or Clubman Cup), hitting "Settings" then
     "Add/Remove Parts".

SPECIAL STAGE ROUTE 11 - Special Stage Route Eleven, 50 laps
    - no limitations
Toyota MR-S Autobacs Apex
Arta NSX
Nissan C-West Razo Sylvia
F687 / S
Chevy Camaro Race Car

ROADSTER ENDURANCE - Apricot Hill, 40 laps
    - NO TUNING (except tires) -- i.e. "stock"
    - Any Mazda Miata MX-5, NO modifications, no "racing versions"
Mazda MX-5 Miata
Mazda MX-5 Miata 1.8 RS
Mazda MX-5 Miata VR Limited
F688 / S
^ ALL Miata MX-5s: Spider & Roadster; FR
 ^ F688 / S : Durn-near everything. It's an MR, NA and superfast.
** You MAY have to buy a car for this event. The Miata LS is the fastest
one stock; double-check at the dealer, then see if there's one in your
garage.  ANY modification other than tires will disqualify you,
including everything from a racing chip, a lightweight flywheel, any
suspension, brakes, etc.  If it has an engine balancing, ported or
polished heads or a weight-reduction these cannot be undone and will
disqualify you.  If you have other parts, you can remove them, but
you'll have to do so before entering the race, either in "Run and
Settings" in the Home menu, or in something like the Sunday or Clubman
Cup. Medium-slicks are recommended, as minimizing pit stops is crucial.

TOKYO ROUTE 246 - 100 laps
Mazda RX7 LM Race Car
Nissan C-West Razo Sylvia
Toyota GT-One Road Car
F094 / H

MISTRAL 78 LAPS - Cote D' Azur, 78 laps (duh!)
Mitsubishi FTO LM Race Car
Jaguar XJ220 Road Car
Pagani Zonda Race Car ^
F686 / M
 ^ Italian Avant Garde
** The course is very narrow, the turns are sharp, passing is difficult.
In other words, take your best Indy car...and maybe a 6-pack.

SUPER SPEEDWAY 150 MILES - 100 laps
Chevy Corvette C5R
Tickford Falcon XR8 Race Car
Clio Sport Race Car
F090 / S
** There are some users which recommend using the Escudo, putting a rubber
band over the accelarator (right analog stick) and letting the Escudo
just ride the walls for those 100 laps.  Might not be a bad way to go,
but don't go blame MasterBart if you end up losing this way.

This "Walkthrough" was based on several compiled pieces of information.  The
first item used was the list of cars and prizes; this information is readily
available over the Internet from countless sources, as well as from playing
the game itself.  For this reason, I do not identify any author for this
information other than myself.

While in the process of making personal notes for myself, prior to any intent
of publishing, I gathered much information from GameFAQs.com, most especially
from one "AlaskaFox".  My notes got transferred into computer documents and
then printed (again solely for my own personal use).  Ultimately much of the
information has ended up in this FAQ.  While in the process of playing the
game I have found numerous inconsistencies between what I found in my notes
and what I found in the game.  Unfortunately this game is far too extensive
for me to correct all possible discrepancies.  These "errors" (they may not
be mistakes, if AlaskaFox & I are using different releases) will be either in
the prize cars from the races, or in the cars usable for each race.  These
will only appear in section 7, "Charts".

The web address from which I gathered AlaskaFox's information is:

  http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/gran_turismo_3_c.txt

I can only assume (not guarantee) that this page is still active, and is in
the same format - and contains the same exact information - as when I found
it.
