NOTE: Cassiopeia A-10: A Recollection was from my old web page
(circa early 2000's.)
I ditched my HP Omnigo 100 in favor of the latest and
greatest, Casio Cassiopeia A-10 Handheld PC. Casio and
Microsoft's marketing department had me in their tractor
beam. As soon as it hit the shelves at ChumpUSA, I started
saving my pennies for it. Eventually, I had enough money for
it and bought it.
The unit itself was pretty slick. Larger screen, larger
keyboard, speaker, backlight, etc. The OS was Windows CE 1.0
(Pegasus) and looked somewhat similar to Windows 95. It was
still grayscale but I don't think there were any consumer
handhelds that were color back then. The unit had sounds
that came out of this little speaker, which I thought was
totally cool.
I found that taking notes on the unit was a little easier
than the Omnigo. The larger keyboard helps.
I did miss the ability to rotate the display from landscape
mode to tablet, which I got use to with the Omnigo. Also, I
don't think there was any character input via stylus
available. The Omnigo had some early form of Grafitti, which
I thought was very useful, but the A-10 didn't have that
option. It probably wouldn't be too useful to have Grafitti
since you couldn't use it in tablet mode.
Alas, my life with the Cassiopeia A-10 handheld was
short-lived. Several months after I purchased the unit, it
was stolen. I was bummed. Good thing my data was backed up.
Still, it sucked. I still followed the development of the
software for the unit after the theft and it looked like
support for the device was abandoned after Windows CE 2.0. I
purchased a Palm III sometime after.
