KICKER: SRI LANKAN AMATEUR'S NOVEL RECOMMENDATION
PAUL/ANCHOR: In our final story, we share a special long-distance
connection made long ago by Victor Gonnetilleke, 4S7VK, secretary of the
Radio Society of Sri Lanka. Here's Graham Kemp, VK4BB.
GRAHAM: Shortwave radio became the gateway to the world for him at age
12 in Sri Lanka, and that gateway widened years later in 1983, when
Victor Goonetilleke, 4S7VK, got his amateur radio license. By then,
he'd fallen in love with a serialised radio drama he'd heard on the BBC,
"The Land God Gave to Cain," based on a novel about a missing amateur
radio operator in Canada's frozen north country. Touched deeply by the
story, Victor has since read the novel a number of times. Now, so many
years later, he is still recommending it to friends. He told Newsline
in an email that he considers this book a special treasure because its
hero is an amateur radio operator.
He is also happy to share another reason why the book is such a treasure
to him. Its title page was autographed by author, the prolific British
novelist Hammond Innes, with whom he had a brief exchange of letters.
The publisher had put the two men in touch with each another. In a
letter in 1981, the author acknowledged to Victor that the book was
difficult for him to write, and that he believed it to be the first
international novel with a ham as its hero.
Every ham has their treasured DX contacts of course, but these
traditionally occur on the air. In Victor's case, the printed page
served as the conveyance nearly a half-century ago for making what
he considers the connection of a lifetime. As he told his friends
in a recent posting on Facebook, it was like getting a QSL.
For Amateur Radio Newsline, I'm Graham Kemp VK4BB.
