AMSAT NEEDS HAMS TO SERVE IN AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
STEPHEN/ANCHOR: AMSAT's Ambassador Program is back, and it's looking for
volunteers to help with its mission. Members of AMSAT are encouraged to
serve as representatives of AMSAT at events, demonstrations - even in
writing and online - sharing the excitement of amateur radio in space
with the public. The ambassadors are also encouraged to invite interested
individuals to join AMSAT, and support its activities, pursuing satellite
QSOs, and following the OSCAR program, which stands for Orbiting Satellites
Carrying Amateur Radio. Ambassadors often serve as coaches and mentors to
new members either in person, or via email, and the internet. Details about
becoming an ambassador can be found at amsat dot org slash ambassador
(amsat.org/ambassador)

KICKER: MAYOR LEARNS SCIENCE OF WORKING A PILEUP
STEPHEN/ANCHOR: For our final story, we visit a recent science festival
held in the UK, where one public official learned the science of working
a pile-up. Here's Jeremy Boot, G4NJH, with that report.
JEREMY: You always remember your first QSO, your first QSL card, and yes,
your first pileup. That holds especially true for one public official in
the UK, who got his first taste of amateur radio at the Basildon Street
Science Festival on Saturday, the 13th of July. The event offered a
sampling of activities by STEM clubs from local schools, STEM-based
organisations, and a number of scientists. Basildon Mayor David
Burton-Sampson joined Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon, and East
Thurrock in a 2-metre radio demonstration being given by Essex Ham at
the event in Basildon Town Centre. With the help of Andrew Brown
EM-ZERO-OH-EN-H (M0ONH) the mayor not only succeeded in working four
stations from the festival, but, according to Essex Ham, he successfully
navigated his way through his first pile-up.
In radio, as in politics, it pays to know how to work the crowd.
For Amateur Radio Newsline, I'm Jeremy Boot, G4NJH.
