|Long time since last update, eh? Pour felicite 2012! | |

|Now, today you probably noticed the whole blackout thing. No, I'm| |
|
|not joining this "cause", since first, it would inconvenience the| |
|
|visitors of this server, second, because I already had a lenghty | |
|
|rant on this issue and third, because it would be rather hard to | |
|
|do in plain text. | |
|
| | |
|
|Instead, I will tell you what me and you probably know already: | |
|
|We live in a walled garden on the Internet. No, I'm not talking | |
|
|about Joe Average, but especially about us, the nerdlingers who | |
|
|lurk on gopher, read newsgroups and use AdBlock, NoScript and all| |
|
|those nice little things that make your Internet experience much | |
|
|more "like in the old days" - we encapsulated ourselves in stasis| |
|
|where there are no stupid ads and banners, where people are still| |
|
|somewhat following the netiquette and where we only bother with | |
|
|relevant information on relevant servers. | |
|
| | |
|
|You will probably reply with "So what?" and continue to enjoy the| |
|
|Internet without caring about the rest of the Internet users. And| |
|
|that's the problem - whenever we need to leave our safe bubble, | |
|
|we just dash out, grab whatever we needed on those scary sites | |
|
|with Flash and Java and stupid comments and then we swiftly crawl| |
|
|back into safety of our "good part" of Internet and leave rest of| |
|
|it to fester. | |
|

|
|So I would like to ask of you to install AdBlock for all people | |
|
|you know (leave the unobtrusive ads enabled), to tell them how to| |
|
|reach "our" part of Internet and how to participate in it, tell | |
|
|them about basics of netiquette and why it's important, show them| |
|
|how to read and post to newsgroups and mailing lists that would | |
|
|interest them and most of all - don't go crawling back into the | |
|
|safe haven and slamming the door shut. Internet is still growing | |
|
|and if anything, we need more people to participate in the effort| |
|
|to make it better! | |
|

|Why would you do that? | |
|
|Because those "good parts" of Internet are slowly becoming vacant| |
|
|as the people who took care of them grow too old or busy. Gopher,| |
|
|usenet, those little forums and IRC, little personal webpages and| |
|
|hobbyist webrings - those all need fresh blood that is drawn from| |
|
|them by social networking and big sites. This is what Internet | |
|
|needs, not a silly black mouseover effects. | |
|

|

|P.S.: Most of the server might be migrated to brand new OpenVMS | |
|
|AlphaServer, but don't go holding your breath for it. | |
